Ireland appeal to be 33rd team at World Cup
Ireland appeal to FIFA for 33rd World Cup spot
* Blatter reveals request from FA of Ireland
* Irish officials not holding their breath
(updating with Irish FA statement, details)
By Mike Collett
JOHANNESBURG, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Ireland have appealed to world governing body FIFA to be allowed to compete as a 33rd team in next year's World Cup finals, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said on Monday.
Although the inclusion of an unprecedented extra team would cause serious logistical problems including extra un-scheduled matches, Blatter said the FIFA executive committee would consider Ireland's request at their extra-ordinary meeting on Wednesday.
Ireland were eliminated from the competition earlier this month by France after Thierry Henry handled the ball in the build-up to William Gallas's equaliser that gave France a 1-1 draw and a 2-1 aggregate playoff win.
"We received a delegation from Ireland at FIFA and they were naturally absolutely unhappy at what has happened. They know the match cannot be replayed and the decision of the referee is final," Blatter told a keynote address at the Soccerex business conference.
"Naturally they have not asked for any sanctions to be given to any player or the referee, but they have asked, very humbly 'can't we be team No.33 at the World Cup? They have asked for that, really.
"I will bring it to the attention of the Executive Committee. I cannot confirm what will happen, but I will report it to the executive committee."
In a statement the FAI confirmed that it made the request to Blatter when a delegation met him in Zurich last Friday.
"A lot was discussed at the meeting and at one stage the FAI asked if Ireland could be accommodated into the World Cup 2010," said the statement.
However Irish sources have privately acknowledged they are not expecting their request to be successful, but have asked FIFA to consider compensating them in some other way in future, perhaps by being seeded in the draw for the 2014 finals.
The statement continued: "Other suggestions were also made to mitigate against further occurrences of such incidents, including the use of additional goal line assistant referees for FIFA international matches, further use of video technology for matches at the highest level, stronger provisions to discourage players from engaging in such blatant breaches of the Laws of the Game and provisions to strengthen referee selection for such important matches." The draw for what is still likely to be a 32-team World Cup will take place in Cape Town on Friday.

* MUCH AS I SYMPATISE WITH THE WAY TRAPATTONI'S TEAM WAS ELIMINATED, THE IRISH REQUEST IS REDICULOUS, NON SENSICAL AND RATHER IRRISPONSIBLE .
*THEIR ADMINISTRATORS ARE WELL AWARE OF THE FACT THAT IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME OF ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF MATCHES WHICH WERE DECIDED BY ILLEGITIMATE DECISIONS BY REFEREES OF ALL COLOURS AND CREED. MARADONA'S 'HAND OF GOD' IS STILL VIVID BUT NOT THE ONLY WRONG DECISION DURING WORLD CUP EDITIONS.
HUMAN NATURE BEING WHAT IT IS THERE IN NO DOUBT THAT SUCH SHAMEFUL DECISIONS WILL CONTINUE TO HAPPEN BUT I AM NOT TOTALLY CONVINCED THAT 'MOVIOLA IN CAMPO' WILL SOLVE ALL EXISTING PROBLEMS.
THERE WERE MANY INSTANCES WHERE DESPITE THE NUMBER OF REPETITIONS ON BIG SCREENS DOUBTS STILL REIGN SUPREME.

true ireland have been robbed but the world cup sells better with france who have platini as a uefa president
also all teams that reached the world cup final and faced the hosts should be also rewarded the world cup since the opponent was playing at home

I very much doubt that Ireland's request will be successful, even to be seeded, let alone to be allowed to participate in the coming World Cup as the 33rd team.
They would be creating a precedent, which will only lead to chaos in the future.
However, I do expect FIFA to act on the matter by FINALLY introducing additional goal line assistant referees.

I don't see FIFA taking this seriously and they shouldn't. We've seen worse stuff than the Henry incident DURING the world cup itself. Vide the several incidents against Italy and Spain in the Japan/South Korea world cup of 2002. Were any actions taken then? No. So why should any be taken now. Stuff like this happens in football on a daily basis, and it's inevitable that it happens even at the highest standards.
On the subject of video-technology though, I agree with it 100%. 3 persons can't cope with the action all the time, but replay technology would make the game fairer. I vote in its favour, only I don't get to vote as such! ;)
