Malta has been elected on the council of the International Maritime Organisation for the seventh time.

The election was held in London today during the 26th general assembly for the organisation.

The assembly, which meets once every two years, is the highest organ within the IMO.

Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt expressed satisfaction at the result and congratulated the senior officials from the Malta Maritime Authority and the Foreign Affairs Ministry for their work which led to this success and hoped that Malta would continue to take an active part in the council increasing security and efficiency in the maritime transport sector.

He renewed the government’s commitment for the MMA to continue strengthening its operations in the mercantile sector.
