Football - In England

Arsenal aiming to score 100 Premier League goals

Arsenal, one of the contenders for this season's title, can become the first Premier League club to score 100 goals in one season even if, for the first time this term, they failed to find their opponents' net in their 1-0 defeat at Sunderland last weekend.

The Gunners have netted 36 goals in 12 matches − 20 at home and 16 on their travels for an average of 3.0 goals per game.

Manchester United had come very close to reaching the 100-goal target when they totalled 97 goals in 38 matches in 1999/2000.

In post-war football in England, there have been 65 clubs that chalked up 100 or more goals in a season throughout the four divisions.

The last club to accomplish this feat were Manchester City in 2001-02, winning the Football League Championship title with a total of 108 goals.

In the top flight, one has to go back 47 years to find the last club to break the 100-goal mark. The Tottenham Hotspur side of 1962-63 finished runners-up with a total of 111 goals.

The first club to achieve a ton of goals in post-war football was Doncaster Rovers, champions of Division Three (North Section) in season 1946-47. That year, the Rovers scored 123 goals, an amount only exceeded by Peterborough who netted 134 times in 1960-61.

From the classification produced on left, 65 centuries (or more) were recorded in the 'goalden' era of the late 1950s and the early 1960s.

For five successive seasons, two first division sides hit a hundred - Wolves managed it four times running between 1957 and 1961. Wolves won the championship twice during this period.

The highest goal tally in the top echelon was that of Tottenham with 115 in their glorious 'double' season of 1960-61.
