I live in Birżebbuġa and like many others walk along the seafront in the morning in a bid to improve my health. I have noticed that for some weeks now, in fact almost every morning, that the promenade and sea front are littered with beer cans, cigarette packets and even empty whiskey bottles. These have not been left lying all over the place by Maltese residents but by immigrants who can be seen at any time of the day swigging away.
Now before anyone goes up in arms, everyone has a right to fresh air and to enjoy their surroundings and meet their friends but - and here is the snag - not to the detriment of others.
The following questions need answering. I am assuming that there are bodies responsible for these people who are teaching them the basics to help them "blend in". Well couldn't respect for others and the surrounding environment also be added to the agenda? I am sick of seeing cans, bottles and one litre wine cartons every morning. There are ample bins provided and notices on each one to tell the Maltese to use them! How ironic!
To make matters worse we have seen some of these people regularly cleaning their noses onto pedestrian walkways, which is disgusting. If necessary benefits should be increased for each visitor to cover the cost of either tissues or hankies. I say this tongue in cheek! Seriously, if we normal residents were caught littering we would be penalised. Does the law exempt these people? But more importantly, why should our walks in our home village be ruined by filth?
