The lack of a University department or programme of cognitive science was highlighted by Noellie Brockdorff, a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.
As an area of academic study in its own right, cognitive science was still relatively young, she said during yesterday's graduation ceremonies.
This was not to say there was no expertise in cognitive science at the University of Malta. On the contrary, many of the contributing disciplines in this profession had thriving departments. "However, it is unfortunate that the expertise found in these departments is not yet being harnessed in an interdisciplinary venture on cognitive science," Dr Brockdorff said.
"Sometimes we find ourselves in the rather absurd situation that we are collaborating with colleagues from other disciplines outside Malta but not with colleagues in those same disciplines within our own University."
She concluded by expressing the hope that the University would encourage and support initiatives for departments to work more closely together in the field of cognitive science.
