Updated: Two arrests over Zabbar church theft
Two men in their twenties have been arrested as part of police investigations into the theft of antique gold items from Zabbar parish church.
The items were stolen from the statue of Our Lady of Graces after thieves climbed scaffolding on the facade of the church and made their way into the church through a belfry.
The theft was noticed by the parish priest during early morning Mass on Sunday. Cash from collection boxes and a laptop used for powerpoint presentations were also stolen.
The gold items, worth thousand of euro, were not insured.
The two men were arrested after an attempt to exchange some old Maltese currency banknotes at the Central Bank raised suspicions. The notes are believed to have come from the collection boxes in the Church.

@ All
One still has to convince me how you can start to reason so! If it comes to that, why does one take drugs instead of giving the money spent to the poor?
I am a non-smoker but I respect people who smoke. I do not go abroad or to restaurants regularly but respect people who do.
So please do shut up and let people do what they like....smoke, eat and go abroad and even even giving their own opinions.
After all the root of the story is that some people got into a church, robbed precious items, tried to break into the tabernacle. Therefore nothing to do with eating out , going abroad and cigarettes.
Oh and I am definitely not saying that they did right...just incase that I misinterpreted. These individuals invaded holy grounds...and giving jewellery to the Church is an old tradition which I do not think is done anymore!

One has still to convince me why people spend so much money on cigarettes when they can donate this money to Dar tal-Providenza.

One still has to convince us why people go to retaurant and abroad when they can donate the money to those in need. Tiftakarha l-istorja ta' l-Ghani u Lazzru li qalilna Gesu'!?

I would like to tell Mr Franco Farrugia that even though i am not from Zabbar, it is often that I have witnessed the person who takes care of the church, opening all the boxes one after the other to empty them. Please check facts before you open your mouth about "respecting people's donations"

One still has to convince me why people give gold to a statue instead of giving to those in need! I'm sure that even our Lady wouldn't want her image full of precious metal whilst human beings are starving!

RECENT DONATIONS OF OLD CURRENCY: DEAR FRANCO FARRUGIA, WE, ZABBAR PARISHIONERS, HAVE BEEN ASKED TO DONATE ANY LEFTOVER OLD MALTESE CURRENCY TO THE CHURCH. THE OLD NOTES IN QUESTION COULD HAVE COME FROM VERY RECENT DONATIONS. I SUPPOSE THAT CASH BOXES ARE OPENED PRETTY FREQUENTLY AS THE PARISH NEEDS CASH VERY BADLY, JUST NOW THERE IS THE FACADE RESTORATION TO BE PAID: THAT IS BESIDES, AND ON TOP OF, THE NORMAL EXPENDITURE, WHICH DOESN'T RUN INTO A CENT OR TWO, GIVEN THE HIGH ELECTRICITY RATES. SO, YOU SEE, THOUGH CURRENCY NOTES WERE OBSOLETE, THEIR DONATION COULD HAVE BEEN AS RECENT AS THE PREVIOUS EVENING. BYE.

The Maltese currency notes were recently donated to the parish for the restoration of the facade of the sanctuary and they were in a glass vase for all to see, near a display of photos of the work being done on the facade. I know because I attended the 6.15 pm mass on Saturday and I saw them there.

@ Franco Farrugia
It is not necessarily the case regarding how much people's donations are respected or not.
Knowing that these notes can still be exchanged at the Central Bank, one may still donate something with the old currency instead of going to Valletta especially if it is a matter of a few old currency notes.

Franco Farrugia tergax tibda tispara minghajr ma taf. Haz-Zabbar hemm kaxxa fejn ghadu s'issa jingabar flus mill-munita l-antika. Ilha hemm sentejn u titbattal regolari. Il-fluss tal-poplu jigu stmati u uzati tajjeb. Ejja sal-knisja u tara!

Mr. Franco Farrugia:
The presence of old Maltese banknotes is not proof that the collection boxes had not been opened for a very long time. They were put there on purpose and their serial number taken note of, by a very cunning authority. Hence the arrests.

Well done to the authorities for the quick handling of the case. That having been said, 'some old Maltese currency banknotes' denotes, probably, the fact that some Church cash boxes had not been opened for a long time - and is that how we respect people's donations?
