@ p.piscitelli,
"cannabis may be harmless, but ones you get used to it you will start looking for a havier drug so it's not cannabis in itself but to what it leads you to ,so i think it's a good thing to keep it illegal."
With that great leap in fine logic we might as well make mother's milk illegal as every alcoholic in dire straits started off on that stuff.
I could not function without cannabis to relieve the pain and inflammation of crippling rheumatoid arthritis and I never had any inclination to try heroin or cocaine , I actually abhor alcohol and tobacco.
Cannabis is more effective and with less side effects than any big pharma drug any doctor ever prescribed to me and cheaper too.
I wish people stop believing the lies government says about cannabis to protect big money interests.
People should fight decriminalize this wonderful herb that is a godsend for mankind and his/her ailments. Fields of cannabis should be legally grown and taxed on our islands to make medicine
paper, cloth, food and fuel. The public should open their eyes and refuse to be led by the nose by vested moneyed interests.

@ Guze Xerri. This myth that cannabis is the beginning of a drug using path is not true. You have to have it in yourself to say no to much more serious drug. I for one don't use cannabis but i am one of those people who wish to make it legal. Plus regarding your comment You can smoke from a bong thus it filters out the addictive stuff. Mainly if its legalized here in Malta im sure that the drug using people percentage here in malta decreases rapidly because half of the drug users, use because to them they a doing something cool about breaking the law so think twice LEGALIZE IT !!

well p.pisictelli what can i say about the gateway theory.........only that its known worldwide that its a total fallacy. only the uneducated one on this subject think that its true and truly believe every stupidity said by prohibitionists on cannabis. so with this theory right now i should be taking heroin, sniffing cocaine and god knows what other stuff. But hey i know the truth on this issue, i've done my research on both medical and recreative use of cannabis and i can assure you that everything that is said by prohibitionists is wrong on cannabis. So educate the youth with the TRUTH and throw away the fallacy that has been going on for quite long. Legalize it and strictly regulate it for medical use and recreational use so that there is a distinction between hard & soft drugs and it can be fully appreciated by patients in need.

@Paul Smith I am afraid that whilst the rest of the world is getting there, the situation will remain stuck as it is! It always takes around half a century (no kidding or exagerating here) for Malta to get accustomed to what the rest of the world is doing, unfortunately. Luckily we are free to move around the EU now :)

well said Miguel Micallef. p.piscitelli is well and truly uninformed regards to cannabis. Most UK cannabis users ignore the law 100%. many don't even care if they get caught growing or using as usually it results in a small fine or a police caution. The user then goes on to use again and grow again, because many think it is there fundamental right under human rights to carry on doing it, because they harm no one, are not anti social and do not commit crime in the greater sense. If the UK put every user and grower in jail in the UK we would have to build a new prison every few weeks - which is simply unafordable. Cannabis will be legal soon anyways, where California, Oregan and Maine Lead - everyone else follows. It's just a matter of some younger leaders getting into power - Our time is here.

@ Piscitelli. Where you are not informed, please refrain from speaking your mind. The gateway drug theory is fundamentally flawed and it is also easy for me to explain how and why. You start off from the assumption that marijuana will lead you to heavier drugs and how did you assume that? Because many people who use heavier drugs also used marijuana. Now, these people also use tobacco and alcohol, and these are not illegal, even though they have no health benefits. So is it OK to keep marijuana illegal but these legal? 2nd point: most people who use heavier drugs also use pizza, pasta, coffee, soft drinks. Does it mean that the user started off from those then went on to heavier drugs? Certainly no, so how did you come to the conclusion that marijuana was the starting point and not somethine else? This is nothing but propaganda fed by anti marijuana lobbyists but in this age of free info you need only do some searches on the internet and you will find the truth. Many states in the US have legalized medical mirijuana. Many countries in Europe are also decriminlizing it or allowing medical marijuana.

finally.....The idea could catch on in the roughly dozen other states with medical marijuana laws. Allen St. Pierre, spokesman for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML, said the organization has already gotten inquiries from Washington state, Michigan, Montana and Maine. Portland police have not received any complaints about the cafe and it is not under any special scrutiny, officials said........Malta what about you????

continues...Volunteers gave a reporter and a photographer a tour of the cafe. No marijuana is sold in the cafe. Patients bring marijuana grown by themselves or by their designated caregivers. They also donate marijuana for other patrons to use. The cafe has a pool table and comfy couches. Martinez demonstrated the “Volcano,” a vaporizer that collects marijuana fumes into a clear plastic pouch with a valve that releases the fumes for patients to inhale. People who want to use marijuana at the cafe can’t get inside until Martinez or other NORML members check their IDs to make sure they are patients registered with the state. The patients also have to be a member of Oregon NORML to use the cafe, pay a $20 a month fee, and a $5 coverage charge at the door. The money goes toward operating costs. In another part of the city is Highway 420 — a number pot users have used as code for marijuana —

Continues.....Even though they have a card, medical marijuana patients have had to confine their smoking to their homes for fear of getting busted. “We have no place of our own. So this is the place,” said Madeline Martinez, executive director of the Oregon chapter of NORML, which operates and monitors the cafe. The idea could catch on in the roughly dozen other states with medical marijuana laws. Allen St. Pierre, spokesman for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML, said the organization has already gotten inquiries from Washington state, Michigan, Montana and Maine. Portland police have not received any complaints about the cafe and it is not under any special scrutiny, officials said. Jan Clutter lives about a block from the cafe and knows the owners well. She said many neighbours would probably prefer it was somewhere else, but there has been no push to have it moved. For some, things could be worse than having a pot cafe. “It’s better than having a sex club, a strip joint or a bar full of drunks open down the street,” neighbour Claudia Nix said.

yes i agree Paul Smith ...whats wrong with the law and its not just in Malta but Malta is way behind .....Marijuana is the best for colds aches and pains and yes it might be not for some but so is Penicillin not for everyone plus all drugs have side effects and the "legal" ones are the worst ones for that ....

I bet the police that found it felt important? Wow 5 Cannabis plants !!!! Lock him up and throw away the keys! When is Malta going to get a grip? Cannabis is harmless and the THC and CBD content of the plant is being made into a pharma product by big pharma to treat many serious medical conditions! Just down the road, i bet there is a farmer growing the deadly cancer causing tobacco perfectly legally with long term effects for your hospitals and your health budget - sounds like insanity too me. Seems like the only drugs the government want you to do are the ones it deems ok to use - Tobacco, Alcohol and pharma drugs - all tax bringing drugs although deadly unlike cannabis. Just for the less educated - you do not need to smoke cannabis you can vapourize it which is harmless.
