Josef Borg, a volunteer with the St John Rescue Corps, was recognised for his efforts in the Voluntary Leadership category at the Outstanding Young Person of the Year Award ceremony.
This award, presented by Junior Chamber International Malta (JCI Malta), recognises individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 who excel in their chosen field and exemplify the best attributes of Malta's young people. This award gives credit to young people who manage to make their life and other people's lives better through remarkable skills.
Borg joined the St John Rescue Corps nine years ago at the age of 17. Throughout these years he undertook all the tasks entrusted to him with enthusiasm and commitment, attending most training courses.
His experience in electrical and mechanical fields saw him being entrusted with managing the necessary structural maintenance within Fort Madalena, a late 18th century Victorian fort, where the Rescue Corps is based.
For Borg, no job is too small and the work is done voluntarily in his free time, often incurring expenses which he covers himself and using his own equipment for repair.
Going out of his way, even beyond the call of duty, to get things done, he has lately taken up the role of motor transport officer, running a small fleet of rescue vehicles and ensuring they are ready for deployment in case of emergency.
Commissioner and Corps Commander Capt. Reuben Lanfranco said the work of a volunteer often goes unnoticed in the fast, hectic and materialistic world we live in. "It is men like Borg and others like him who need to take their due prominence when the occasion arises," he added.
The St John Rescue Corps is a voluntary organisation under the auspices of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. It was set up to carry out rescue operations as a support unit to the constituted authorities in Malta. The Rescue Corps is made up of adult volunteers, fully trained in firefighting, rescue techniques and first aid.
