MDU claims majority membership of Tug Malta workers
The Malta Dockers Union has requested recognition as the representative of the workers at Tug Malta after a verification exercise with the Registrar of Trade Unions showed it enjoys membership of the majority of the workers.
The union said it first claimed to represent the workers on November 3 when it presented new members and presented their resignation from other trade unions.
The current collective agreement for Tug Malta workers, which expires in December, was negotiated by the GWU.
The MDU had also taken over from the GWU as the recognised trade union of port workers and was involved in a bitter battle for recognition at Malta Freeport.

I was a member of GWU for 4 years in the 80's. Unfortunately,it was not there when I needed it and I resigned. All the workers that are mentioned in the article and has now switched to other unions have all been used politically one day or another and fought disputes which were not theirs. GWU was used politically and is now carrying he burden of those mistakes. It lost valid persons too like Harold Walls and Manuel Micallef. I think it's time for a reshuffle before it's too late. I wonder too how many members the GWU really has.

@ Joe Vella,
what about GRTU? I am right that one of its main members was a PN candidate in the last EP election? or that's ok?

Once again sour grapes for Tony Zarb & Co. GWU's TV and Radio adverts are all a lost cause and causing only a domino effect. Now the GWU has lost union recognition amongst all workers working at the Maltese Ports. MDU enjoys recognition amongst licenced port workers workers, tally clerks, Burdnara Cargo Group and now at Tug Malta. UHM is the recognised unions for Freeport Workers, Pilots and Mouring men. The GWU disappeared completely from our ports ! Well done Tony, Victor, Gejtu and Michael !

@ G Schembri
you need not wonder!
haven't you ever heard that an ex-union secretary for airline employees was eventually, alas... alas, employed by airline itself??? Some people love somersaults, for the love of their ego... from defending workers' rights to standing for their employer!!!
Besides, have you ever visited the c.v. (political or trade union-wise) of some directors in government bodies / entities/ agencies / authorities? You better do, and you will stop wondering!!!
By the way, did you ever hear of the tune "only-in-malta"?

Perception or not the UHM took industrial action in all Govt Departments under a Nationalst Govt while the GWU did not took any industrial action un der a Labour Govt. These are the facts.

@ G. Schembri
If there is anyone to blame certainly it is the the GWU itself and the PL. An independent Union should never be part of a political party. Once it sell her soul out to a political party it throws the interest of the workers down the door.
Fortunately, todays workers are more mature and conscience of their needs.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER! The more the workers are the dived the less chance they have of getting a better deal. United we Stand Divided we fall. Prosit whoever is dividing the workers to the benefit of the employer. I wonder how he will be rewarded in the furure.

@ Mr Joseph Scicluna
You mean like the UHM is perceived as being a front for the PN?

this is what happens when a workers' union is seen as being a wing of a political party.

Was the secret ballot ever carried out at the Freeport?
If not, why not?
