Man caught carrying 200 canaries at airport
About 200 sedated canaries, some alive and others dead, were allegedly discovered stuffed in a Libyan man's jacket and in his bag as he tried to smuggle them out on a flight to Tripoli.
The find was made last week by airport security officers as the man was preparing to leave the island.
"They were sedated with what smelt like lighter liquid," Animal Welfare Department director Mario Spiteri said. He said the birds were in a very bad state when they were found and quite a few of them had died.
The popular songbirds were put in groups of about five in small pouches and then stuffed into the man's hand luggage and jacket pockets, running the risk of squashing the fragile birds.
This was not the first time someone had been caught trying to smuggle birds to Libya. A spokesman for the Malta International Airport said security officials were coming across these cases about twice a week.
"Some birds are found alive, others dead," she said, adding that those which were still alive were donated to Razzett tal-Ħbiberija. The airport security department has been in contact with the Animal Welfare Department to establish the best way forward to prevent such cruelty to animals.
Dr Spiteri said this was a blatant case of animal cruelty, adding the department was planning to introduce legislation that would see people caught trying to smuggle animals fined on the spot.
For the time being, people caught attempting to smuggle birds can be charged with animal cruelty.

Sorry my mistake.I thought he was bringing them in instead of smuggling them out as is usually the case.

Hmmmm. a good laugh yes . Sorry about the birds though.Should never be treated so.
But why does it always come round to hunters and trappers.
I have hunted for many years and never saw a canary flying about unless its like
the story '' tal garnija '' or they only stay in [--------- ] reserves and were cought from there by some naughty naughty big game poacher to be sold abroad .
Could be the next big plan to make big money by someone.......who knows ?
But keep on inventing you might just hit the jackpot one day..

Aren't canaries banned from being trapped in Malta. Does this mean that not only trappers are persisting with this cruel "hobby" but also exporting these birds?!!!
Mr or Ms Agius made the comment above......May I please suggest that before commenting on any subject first you check of what are you reading on.The canary is not a migrant bird and it is not trapped .Our my belief is that you are a one sided person that jsut hates hunting and trapping and comments like a parrot as he is told.................e bilhaqq you made me laugh. vanni iz-zejtuni

What an ugly habit of blurting our mouths out and going to print without understanding what we read and/or thinking about what we are saying!
@victor pulis : quarantine on importation?
@P. Agius : how does trapping come in this? and kindly quote which law prohibits trapping "canaries" not just blurt assumptions. Canaries in Malta are captive bred!

@A spokesman for the Malta International Airport said security officials were coming across these cases about twice a week.
Why do they have to encounter this monstrosity twice a week? And this not to mention the number of birds who pass in such conditions without being detected. Our politicians must wake up and enact proper laws to safeguard animals from such inconsiderate individuals.
How quick was our Prime Minister and other officials to criticise the EU human rights court over the crucifix in state schools, but we never hear any criticism or action for such atrocities.

@ P.Agius..
Canaries in Malta are homebred and domesticated birds and their breeders must run into the hundreds if not thousands. However I don't think it takes rocket science to know that these are NOT trapped by trappers as you imply. The simple fact that you have come up with such a comment shows that the ultra biased anti's of your ilk have nothing better to do than blurt out the usual unfactual statements !!! Get your facts right qabel ma taqaw ghan.....

Canaries are not trapped in Malta - they are bought from pet-shops! Moreover, as the birds were being taken out of Malta (and not brought into Malta), the question of quarantine is not pertinent in this case. People seem to just jump the gun and splash whatever comes to their mind before even understanding what the article is all about in the first place!!

P. Aguis>> Please before you speak. Canaries do not migrate over Malta, they are tropical birds. The problem are not the hunters etc but the ignorance amongst people.

A blatant case of animal cruelty indeed. Poor little birds. Exporting canaries? Dont they have canaries in Libya. If he wants to do such business why does he not rear them himself in Libya?
Perhaps such perpetrators should have inflicted upon what they do inflict on animals. Stuffed in a confined space for 4 hours in such case, with very restricted movement and breathing space.

"the department was planning to introduce legislation". However much I agree with the action taken by the Animal welfare department we cannot have government departments legislating. That is not their job. I hope that this is a mis-quotation. Legislation in any democracy is carried out by elected representatives of the people.

those which were still alive were donated to Razzett tal-Ħbiberija. weren't they supposed to go through quarantine first?
