Escaped migrant caught trying to leave Malta
A Nigerian immigrant who escaped from Safi detention centre in June was arraigned in court today after he was caught trying to leave Malta, allegedly using false documents.
Dennis Abiku, 23, was denied bail after having been accused of being in possession of false Italian documents. He pleaded not guilty.
Another migrant, Fred Obeng, 24, admitted similar charges and was jailed for six months.

Well said Miss Laura, i couldn't agee more. Still won't be for long i hope, we got some many wise guys in this country who i think they are a God sent as they seem to be gifted with a 6th sence(Mostly politicians) and know whats going to happen in the future, they are known as Prophets, i hope the are right as at this monment in time, we arew begining to sink faster then a ton of bricks, and needless to say these migrants are not AMUSED by our country, thats why they want to leave before the sh*t hits the fan, and 2010 is the proof of the pudding.

Nigerians are economic migrants, their country is very wealthy, and much wealthier then Malta.
Nigeria produces over 3 million barrels of oil a day, and has been exporting oil for decades (3 million at say $70 per barrel = $210, 000,000 a day in revenue!).
So forget the sob stories -it is their own government mis-management problem, and they (the Nigerians) need to change things in their own country, it is not Malta's problem. Immediate repatriation of all Nigerians is a fair and humane policy - they are here because they are supported by the EU (back in Nigeria they get zip).

Does it cross your mind that it is ILLEGAL to travel without proper documents?? Illegality has to pay a price, or should.

So really its not only us the Maltese who are disatisfied with the state of this country, high price and high cost of living even the immigrants are feeling the pinch.

@Michel Bencini
even if they manage to escape, they would be send back to Malta if they get caught. it's a useless attempt to escape

How pathetic! This illegal immigrant from Nigeria risks his life to find a better place to live, and ends up in Malta. He is immediately incarcerated and put in a detention camp, fed and clothe provided with free medical benefits etc. So even though he arrived in Malta illegally, he is very welcome, but now when he tries to leave Malta illegally, he is put in jail, fed three square meals a day, his own cell (maybe), same benefits as before apply. How pathetic can this be? This person can't win for losing.

There is something terribly wrong if not cynically comical in this picture. In Malta, refugees are being detained against their will on their unwelcome arrival to its shores. The Maltese seemingly, do not relish seeing them hanging around so they lock them up. When these illegal aliens finally make a run for it, to the apparent great relief of many a Maltese who wants to be rid of them, the Maltese authorities throw them back in jail to rot at the taxpayers' expense!
'Love Thy Neighbour As Thyself' used to be the tenet of the national character. Like many things passe', it is now a shawdow of its former self and a convenient fad one pays lipservice to during the Sunday liturgy. I wonder what the average Maltese would do were he or she found to be in the same shoes of these unfortunate individuals. What would the Sacred Heart of Jesus do?
