In affluent countries, certain illnesses of the rich are spreading like the wildfires we witnessed some months ago in Greece, Portugal, Australia, the US and elsewhere. The not-so-well-off are lucky in that they keep back from indulging and so avoid these cruel scourges.

The same can be said for divorce. Though each year we celebrate Independence Day, our small islands do not exist in a vacuum and outside pressures take their toll. Thus, one of the laws which was enacted, I have no doubt due to outside pressure, was that, years back, obliging the Maltese courts to recognise foreign court sentences bringing to naught valid marriages - a proviso which runs counter to the legal ethos of these islands.

As with physical illnesses of the rich, such an indulgence, if taken on board, will bring more misery and to many more than the percentage presently weathering relational storms.
