Rabat win 7-6 on penalties

Contrary to what had been expected, the match did not offer a spectacle as goalmouth opportunities were few and far between.

The first chance came Qormi's way when John Williams gathered a throughball from Steve Tanti but his flick at goal was saved by Ian Azzopardi.

After eight minutes, Qormi's defenders Andre Ghio and Owen Piscopo failed to clear a harmless ball and Josef Antonelli took advantage by setting up Jonathan Micallef who beat Ramon Chircop from close range.

On 33 minutes, Qormi almost equalised from a short corner action only for the ball to be cleared off the line by Shawn Falzon.

Eight minutes later, Qormi were again unlucky when a Ryan Brincat scorcher smacked against the upright. As the game progressed, Qormi grew increasingly frantic and erratic, making it easy for Rabat to control proceedings.

When everything seemed won and lost, Qormi finally got an equaliser through Julian Zahra following a skirmish inside the Rabat D. The game ended with Rabat forcing three short corners in a row but Chircop denied them with two first-class saves.

Extra-time did not produce any scoring chances and penalties had to be taken. In the first series of five penalties each, the teams tied at three-all. In the second series Rabat won 4- 3 to win the Challenge Cup.

Young Stars win 4-3 on pens

The third-fourth place play-off was a ding dong battle between beaten semi-finalists White Hart and Young Stars.

White Hart immediately went on the attack to take a two-goal lead by the 14th minute through Paul Torpiano and Luke Borg Costanzi (penalty).

Floriana pulled one back on the 19th thanks to Mark Camilleri following a short corner action. On 25 minutes Carl Tua restored White Hart's two-goal lead but two minutes later, Luke Busuttil Leaver made it 3-2 from yet another short corner action.

Five minutes into the second half, Busuttil Leaver levelled for Floriana when he forced his way through the White Hart defence.

On 48 minutes, Floriana forged ahead for the first time when Christian Bonello met a cross on the left with a diving reverse hit that beat Vassallo Agius.

White Hart's reaction was immediate and after Tua hit the post, Tony Azzopardi made it four-all on 53 minutes.

Busuttil Leaver completed his hat- trick on 57 minutes with a swerving slap shot to make it 5-4 but White Hart again tied the score courtesy of a penalty stroke that was ably converted by Borg Costanzi.

In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, Floriana got the better of their opponents by the odd goal in seven.
