Cameroon coach Paul LeGuen has signed a seven-month extension to his contract which will keep him in charge of the team at next year's African Nations Cup and World Cup finals, federation officials announced yesterday.

The French-born coach originally signed a five-month deal with Cameroon in July with the task of resurrecting their hopes of a place at the two tournaments.

LeGuen then won four qualifying matches in a row to secure an African record sixth World Cup finals appearance for the Indomitable Lions. They will also participate in January's African Nations Cup finals in Angola.

$181,100 damages for ref attack

The Danish fan who attacked German referee Herbert Fandel during Denmark's Euro 2008 qualifier with Sweden in June 2007 has been ordered to pay $181,100 in damages.

The 31-year-old man, whose name was not disclosed in court papers, must pay the sum to the Danish Football Association (DBU), the City Court of Copenhagen ordered.

The June 2 match at the Parken Arena in Copenhagen was abandoned in the closing stages after the fan attacked Fandel after he sent off Denmark's Christian Poulsen and awarded the visitors a penalty with the score at 3-3.

Sweden were later awarded a 3-0 victory by UEFA.

Dalglish's son named Rowdies coach

Paul Dalglish, son of former Liverpool and Scotland striker Kenny, has been appointed coach of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, the second division club said.

Dalglish played with Newcastle United and Norwich City in England before ending his career in Major League Soccer with the Houston Dynamo and this will be his first club coaching position.

The Rowdies are entering the United Soccer Leagues next season. As a manager Dalglish's father won the English league title with Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers.

Eduardo pens new Arsenal contract

Croatia striker Eduardo has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal, the Premier League club said.

The 26-year-old has scored 18 goals in 48 appearances since joining from Dinamo Zagreb in 2007 but his time in north London has been overshadowed by a career-threatening leg break early in 2008 that ruled him out for nearly a year.

"We're delighted Eduardo has signed a new long-term contract with us," manager Arsene Wenger said.

"Eduardo is a special player with huge talent and natural goal-scoring ability and we're all so happy he has committed his future to Arsenal.

"We have also seen in his comeback from injury, Eduardo is a human being full of courage, bravery and commitment. His full recovery from this injury is a testament to Eduardo's character," added Wenger.

Lippi decision before World Cup

The future of Italy coach Marcello Lippi will be decided before the world champions travel to South Africa for next year's World Cup, the head of the Italian football federation said.

There has been speculation in the Italian media that Lippi will not continue beyond his current contract which expires at the end of the World Cup and could return to former club Juventus, possibly as a director.

"Obviously results are important in football but you cannot leave the decision on the future of the national team coach until after the World Cup," federation head Giancarlo Abete said.

"We need to go to South Africa with our ideas clear."

Abete said he wanted to avoid the uncertainty that surrounded Roberto Donadoni's future in the job in the run-up to Euro 2008.

Ivankov retires from internationals

Bulgaria goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov has announced his retirement from international football following his country's 4-1 win against Malta in a friendly on Wednesday.

"I quit and this is my final decision," the 34-year-old Ivankov told reporters.

Ivankov, capped 62 times for his country, was part of Bulgaria's squad at the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal. He also won three Bulgarian league titles and five Bulgarian cups while playing for Levski Sofia.

Del Piero back for Udinese match

Juventus will welcome back captain Alessandro del Piero for Sunday's game against Udinese.

The 35-year-old striker has been out with a thigh injury for over a month but is set to return to action.

Del Piero's absence has not hindered the Bianconeri, who are in second place and five points behind Serie A leaders Inter.

"I see an in-form Juventus side," said Del Piero.

"I am fully recovered and eager to return to play. In order to catch Inter, we have to remain strong and hope Jose Mourinho's side have a drop in form."
