New appointments in the police force
Ray Zammit was appointed assistant commissioner and Carmelo Magri, superintendent, this afternoon.
Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici said during the ceremony that the people considered each crime to be an important one which deserved to be investigated.
The force should follow each report they received from the public - a main source of information, because victims of crime had the right to justice. This would lead to more trust in the force.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici said the criminality rate continued to go down every year for the past four years.
Police work was bearing results and this could be seen in the increase of 100 people in the prison population since the beginning of the year, the record number of people arraigned in the same period and the nearly half a tonne of drugs hauled.
He said that six assistant commissioners and 12 superintendents were appointed during this legislature.

Congratulations to A.C. Ray Zammit. I first met him when he was writing the book meta jibki l-Korp. I used to meet him at the archives during his research. Later on I worked much closer with him and his staff when he was responsible for the ALE. I am sure that he will perform his duty with great devotion as he did in the past during his career since he joined the Police force.

We hope that these appointments were made on merit and not on seniority. What the Minister failed to point out is that rarely do the public encounter any policemen on foot patrol on our streets with the consequence that abuses are everywhere. Going to the police stations for assistance is a farce.

Congratulations to newly appointed Asst. Commissioner Raymond G. Zammit, a most deserving gentleman who not only inspires trust and respect, but is a perfect example of what citizens expect of senior officers within the Police Force! A big well done to Ray also from his many admirers in the world of arts and literature! I am sure all the townsfolk of Ray's beloved Mosta are so proud of his long-deserved high appointment! Well done Ray! As the saying goes, many are given honour, but only some deserve it!

Nice to see some better faces around the top of the administration. Some of the ones in the photo might consider also on taking their 25 year pension and let new blood up the ranks. A Police Force which still loses INTERNAL correspondence or does not reply to citizen's letter, except if you complain through the newspapers, whilst also contradicting itself in its statements is nothing we should be proud of. Signed David. A. Agius, ex-PS498.
