The Animal Welfare Department are seeking information about the owner/s of dogs that used to be kept locked in a dark place in Valletta, surrounded by their excrement.

The dogs were saved this morning following an anonymous call to the department.

Godrick Marston told timesofmalta.com that the dogs were kept in a sort of passageway in a bastion opposite the Yellow Garage.

The property belonged to the Housing Department and the person/s keeping the dogs in it had forced open the door and installed new locks.

Inside, the department found two bulldogs which had bites on them and a chihuahua in one area and an American pitbull in another.

Although the dogs were fed, they had no fresh air, were left in darkness and the place was filthy.

The dogs were placed in vans and taken to a sanctuary.
