A man was jailed for three months and disqualified from driving for the same period of time for driving while being drunk.

Nicholas Bellotti, 34, was driving along St Nicholas Street, Cospicua on January 30, two years ago at about 6 p.m. when he collided with a car driven by Roseanne Aquilina, whom he then attacked, the court heard.

Police Sergeant Kenneth Vella Gregory said he had spoken to the victim, who was in a state of shock, who told him that Mr Bellotti had hit her and then tried to run her over.

Ms Aquilina testified that the accused was going through the inside lane when the collision occurred. Smelling of alcohol, he was aggressive and began swearing at her. He shouted at her ordering her to move her car out of the way. She replied she could not because she had to wait for the police. He then reversed his car in her direction and had she not moved out of the way she would have surely been hit, Ms Aquilina said.

The accused denied he had hit her and added that he had paid for the damage caused to her vehicle.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano acquitted him of slightly injuring Ms Aquilina because she had forgiven him but found him guilty of driving while under the influence of alcohol, driving dangerously, failing to drive on the correct side of the road, swearing in public and relapsing.

Police Inspector Alexander Grech prosecuted. Lawyers Josè Herrera and Veronique Dalli appeared for the accused.
