Thirty sustainable tourism projects have been chosen to benefit from over €4.6 million, Tourism Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco said yesterday.

The projects were approved following a first call for a grants scheme of €10 million in EU funding earlier this year. The second call closes at the end of the month and the last is scheduled for next year.

About €2 million for the 30 projects consisted of EU funding, Dr de Marco said, listing among the initiatives the restoration of an old oven so tourists could experience the old tradition of baking Maltese bread.

Other projects include the upgrade of a spa in a Gozo hotel; an audio guide service for Valletta in seven languages that operates via GPS and the improvement of facilities in a football club to promote sports tourism.

Dr de Marco said a language school would be investing in the improvement of its facilities for training and accommodation and a diving school would be buying a compressor and other equipment.
