A man who allegedly made a false police report about a car accident was yesterday charged with de-frauding an insurance company last Wednesday.

The 32-year-old driver, Gaetano Farrugia of Żebbuġ, was allegedly asked by a third person to report that their vehicles had collided when no such thing had happened, sources said.

Mr Farrugia pleaded not guilty to defrauding Citadel Insurance Plc, damaging his car in order to try and get payment, filing a false report and giving false testimony six days later. Magistrate Giovanni Grixti granted him bail against a personal guarantee of €3,000.

Police Inspector Trevor Micallef prosecuted.

Lawyers Emmanuel Mallia and Arthur Azzopardi appeared for Mr Farrugia.
