Gonzi tight lipped on Dalli nomination
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi this morning was tight lipped on whether Social Policy Minister John Dalli is to be nominated to serve as European Commissioner.
Mr Dalli is widely expected to take up the position. He had a meeting with EU Commission President Jose' Manuel Barroso earlier this week, when his possible portfolio was reportedly discussed.
Dr Gonzi, who inaugurated the new Malta office of Mazars accountancy firm in Attard, said an announcement would be made at the appropriate time. He later today leaves for Brussels where EU leaders will discuss the appointment of the first EU president in terms of the Lisbon Treaty.
When contacted, Mr Dalli said he had no plans to make any announcement today.

Well done PM, do not give in to reporters whose only aim is to be the first to give the news. Why not wait until it is time to know what is actually happening?
I do not know if this is a case of 'promote to remove', but anyhow, John Dalli deserves the job. He always did a good job wherever he was. In a way it will make good for the hectic years he passed under suspicion, which proved untrue.

Some people manage to give a bitter taste to some good news which was brought along this morning in the finance sector. Mazars Malta has inaugurated its state of the art office presently employing around 20 people, and planning to recruit more people in the near future. In a global world of crisis, where people are being laid off, this is very positive and encouraging!!!!

@ Maria Galea Fenech
If John Dalli is appointed, I am sure that Joe Borg will go to Greener pastures; and with the magnificent job that he have done over the last 5 years I am sure there will be many knocking on his door to secure his services.
In terms who will replace John Dalli, I wouldn't worry to much, there is plenty of talent among the PN backbenches unlike the PL benches.

If Mr. Dalli is appointed, what will happen to Mr. Borg and who will take the place of Mr. Dalli in the PN and in government? Can anyone shed any light please?

An so he should be with inquisitive journalists: tight lipped. WHen the time comes, he will make a statement. And sour grapes to those who think they will have it strait from the horses mouth.

Why is this run on the Prime Minister taking place? Curiosity? Interest? What? Can't they wait for the PM to announce the nomination when he feels it's time to do so? The same thing with the utility tariffs. One News and some sensational journalists are daily asking for the new tariffs. Can't they wait for an officail announcement. The excuse that people are tense about knowing them is futile! We are very curious people! These journalsist have a very clear agenda! To alarm the people!! The government has already given the hint that tariffs are going to be almost the same as last October but announced too that he is going to almost make up for it by giving a family credit

This matter is like reading the rumanz " IL- MISTERJI TAL WARDIJA " Why every thing that this government do, it is always with suspense?
I think that R.C.C. will take this job. I also believe that Gonzi really wants to get rid of Johnny , especially now that the Tonio Fenech saga, is hurting .

I am sure that Dr Gonzi knows that John Dalli is one of his best ministers. If John Dalli will be nominated as European Commissioner it will be a drastic move for the Nationalist Party.Dr Dalli is doing a very good job as Social Policy Minister and in my opinion currently no one can replace him. It will be a sort of betrayal from all those supporters who voted for him in the last general election. Hope that Dr Dalli remains our Social Policy Minister and if Dr Gonzi decides to nominate him in three years time the nationalist party will have the most drastic defeat in life!

If Minister John Dalli decides to call it a day and move to Brussels as Commissioner, I would like to be the first to thank him for all he has done whilst serving our country in Parliament. He will undoubtedly do a fine job wherever. Good luck John.
