Women given €3.2 million in tax refunds
Women who returned to work received €2.1 million in income tax refunds last year, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said in reply to a parliamentary question.
He told Labour MP Justyne Caruana that €436,625 were refunded to women who returned to work in 2008.
€3.2 million were given in refunds since 2006.
The minister said 3,661 requests for refunds were made and 3,652 were accepted.
Women are entitled to refunds in order to encourage them to return to work after leaving, usually to bring up their children.

T Morris:
Tax refund is 2000 E and high earners that paid more than 2000 E in a whole year, received all tax paid back.
It was announced earlier this year that a tax credit of up to a maximum of EUR2,000 was being made available:
*
for every child under the age of sixteen to those women returning to work after an absence of five years or more; or
*
for every child born from 1 January 2007 onwards to those women resuming work after the birth of the child.
This benefit has now been extended.
Instead of utilising the EUR2,000 credit over a two-year period, mothers returning to work may opt for:
one year's tax credit without limit in respect of every child, if the income is from employment; or
*
one year's tax credit up to a maximum of EUR5,000 for every child, if the income is from self-employment.

Unfortunately there is no pleasing everyone, but the majority of mothers like myself are most likely not in the 'high earning' category and nor are they 'rich'!
Small Reminder - tax refund limit was Euro 1,200....I surely did not reach the target and whoever was a 'high earner' and paid more than Euro 1,200 worth of taxes did not receive more than the limit anyway!
In this regard, although not everyone got to benefit from this incentive, I still think the government tackled it in the right way....

A great encouragment for women who have to be mothers, workers & housewives all in one day!! its definetly not an easy life. Pity I lost my refund as my daughter was born end of 2006 and scheme started for those born in 2007!

I'd put it better this way: taking from the pocket of the poor and putting it in the pocket of the rich! Robin Hood in reverse!! lol

The perfect example of taking from one pocket and putting it in the other.

A mother earning a minimum wage obviously does not pay any tax and is not entitled to such benefits. Her husband would probably be financing (through taxes paid by him) the refunds to which high earning mothers are entitled.
What a big shame!!

What about the women who have been working even when their children were still very young and are working still, they raised their children through sacrifices and had to take care of their families, homes and some of them also continued their studies. These women have also helped the Maltese economy. It is about time that these mothers are also given some kind of incentive.
