Between 2002 and 2008 there were a total of 147 suicides in Malta and Gozo, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech told Anthony Agius Decelis (PL) in reply to a parliamentary question.

There were 19 in 2002, 20 in 2003, 24 in 2004, 18 in 2005, 26 in 2006, 26 in 2007 and 14 in 2008.

In the same period there were 11 cases of poisoning due to the ingestion of harmful substances in 2002, six in 2003, six in 2004, nine in 2005, nine in 2006, 12 in 2007 and eight in 2008.

These suicide cases and accidental deaths were classified under the International Classification of Diseases.
