The GWU said this afternoon that it was disgusted by comments reportedly made by the chairman of Enemalta, Alex Tranter, who, it said, seemed to want to implicate the workers in sabotage which caused this morning's power cut.
The union said such comments were premature and had been made when investigations and a magisterial inquiry had barely started.
It would have been far better had Mr Tranter thanked and praised the workers for their immediate action to contain the damage and restore power in the shortest time possible, the union said.
Through his comments Mr Tranter had prejudiced investigations by expressing the view that what had taken place could have been a premeditated act, without considering that the machinery involved was old and could easily develop a fault, the GWU said.
It thanked the workers for their efficient work in circumstances which could have been dangerous for them.
