I find it astonishing that Social Policy Minister John Dalli has been offered this job when he has more important things to do in Malta.

@ lawrence Schembri . stop saying nonsense. John Dalli can always refuse the nomination and stay at his job. John's track record shows that he is definitely fit for the job and like Dr. Borg will come out with flying colours. The pity is that the Govt is going to lose a heavy weight.

John Dalli would do Malta a great service as an EU Commissioner. Yet we will lose him because we need someone like John to comedown on people abusing the Social Services. John is a doer and as such will surely do a good European job.....as for becoming prime minister I think that time will enlighten us who from the younger generation of politicians will be suitable. John would definitely be fit for the post but i am sure he will make way for a younger more energetic person.

This has nothing to do with the capability of Onor Dalli which no one doubts, but how convenient to give him the proverbial golden handshake to remove the possibility that he may contest the leadership of the party!!

@Lewis Balzan.It looks like you suppoters of the PL party never learn once again start counthing the chickens befor they hetch.In 3 years more to go the PN could finish the ELCTORAL PROGRAM and after that we could see you with a special bonocular behindt the PN. tHE PAST TALK FOR ITS SELF.Politicians like John Dalli will be a great asset for Malta especialy in the EU.

One way to get rid of `a-pain-in-the-neck`. In the UK he would have been carted to the House of Lords. Pity really, I do like and reespect John Dalli`s intrgrity.

I will not go into the merits of JD deserving or not this post, but I do have a question. Why is it that for yet another high and important position we do not have a female nominee? Why is it that Malta always seems to have older men in positions of power?

The Hon. John Dalli was FORCED to resign following a FRAME UP, where as we well say in Maltese " Iz-Zejt tela' f'wicc l-ilma" and the culprit is serving a prison sentence......Have'nt you read any news article in this regard MR.FORMOSA???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Secondly....... "getting rid of this one and the other"????????? I ask.... I think..... Shall the Hon. Dr.Gonzi decide upon entrusting such a post holding on to grudges or even worse, using this post to clear his cabinet of heavy weights like the Hon. Dalli or the Hon.Gatt.........Halluna .........I am sure the Prime Minister will entrust this prestigious post to a performer, a man who has shown in past performance HE can deliver, a man strong in principle, a visionary. And I pledge to you bloggers and other people who may read this article to stop and think......ask yourselves..... Who in our cabinet is this person???? Holding these virtues???? The answer comes naturally.........the HON. JOHN DALLI.

Of course John Dalli would make an excellent EU Commissioner. But he would make an even better Prime Minister and leader of the PN. Looks like Gonzi and his clique will manage to postpone Dalli's election as PN leader until after the next election when the PL will most probably be in office, the PN in opposition and Dr Gonzi retired having left his mark in local politics after inaugurating the new Parliament building.

May i remind you that Hon. Dalli was cleared of any accusation, resigned and was re-elected by the people. Leave the speculation for Malta Today !!!

He certainly deserves this role and he will prove himslef more than capable.

My only worry is the huge void Hon. Dalli will leave behind him. Unfortunately for us, there are not many politicians of his calibre.

I believe that Mr. John Dalli deserve this post,not because the sad story they made him and his family ( the P.N. ) passed through,but because he is the right person for that job. I hope this is not a payback from Dr.Gonzi, so Mr. Dalli closes his mouth on Mr. Tonio Fenech cases. Because we are not stupid,we know that Dr. Gonzi did not act as two weights two measures.At least Dr. Gonzi should accept to investigate; what will happen after,it will be his responsibility. I think you should continue with the story of his resignation and keep on saying that afterwards he was cleared of any wrong doings. Now if you dont agree with our judiciary system, thats another story.

I dont think Gonzi wants to get rid of him. After being nominated (which wasnt made public), one has to decide wether to take up the post or not. If he's interested, then let it be. Can understand why everyone questions everything

I think he deserves this post. I feel sorry for us citizens because he is a great minister, one of the few who can actually control the health sector ( make sure its employees (Surgeons, doctors, nurses etc) really work, control free medicine etc) and make it once and for all feasable for the goverment to run.

Dalli would make an excellent Commissioner. He has been throughout his career a reformer and a consensus builder . People of his calibre and with his traits are needed in Europe.

May I remind you all that John Dalli had to resign for a certain reason some time back. And this man should take over such an important post in Brussels? His nomination would be a very wrong decision by the government. But maybe Gonzi just wants to get rid og him. I'd prefer to see Austin Gatt as EU Commissioner in Brussels. I think Gonzi needs to get rid of him more than anyone else.

Speculation is rife, Dalli refuses to comment about his visit paid for by our taxes (tiftakru l-gazetta Mhux fl-interess tal-poplu???) and therefore the outcome must be 2+2 = 4.
