Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika spokesman on EU and international affairs, said AD brought up the issue with the commission and following other complaints by private citizens to the European Parliament Petitions committee, the Commission said it intended to contact the Maltese authorities and investigate the departure tax levied on passengers using maritime transport.
AD chairman Michael Briguglio, said:
“It is good to see that the European Commission is following up the complaints of AD and other private citizens.
“European Union citizenship should bring with it the possibility for the Maltese to enjoy the freedom of movement which all other EU citizens enjoy, and should not mean the addition of illegitimate tax burdens,” he said.
