Teenager, 16, dies in seven-storey fall in Sliema
A 16-year-old boy died tragically in Sliema, yesterday. The teenager from Żurrieq fell into a shaft in a block called Nazzareno Flats in Nazzarenu Street, Sliema, the police said.
He was certified dead on the spot. Apparently the boy was playing with about four other friends in a vacant penthouse when the accident happened, according to sources.
Neighbours said they heard a loud bang when the boy hit the ground floor. His friends were distraught and in tears, the neighbours added.
The police were informed about the accident at about 7.15 p.m. The street was cordoned off to traffic.
Duty Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani Grima has appointed experts to assist in an inquiry. The police are investigating.

Tragic and unnecessary. There is no health and safety concern in Malta. Walk passed a construction site at night and you will see men working in the dark with no helmets and no high visibility clothing. These stories will unfortunately continue to appear.

May God the Almighty comfort and console his forlorn parents and family members! Let us remember Samuel in our daily prayers throughout our earthly life. A tragedy difficult to accept or understand, but if it is God's will, then let it be done........time will provide a divine reason for such an incomprehensible loss! Courage and strength dear parents of Samuel!

Samuel was an exemplary student. I used to teach him English when he was in Form 3.3. He was definitely one of the best students at our school - hard-working, well-read, intelligent and very respectful towards each and everyone. Rest in peace my friend. We at St. Benedict College, Kirkop will NEVER forget you!!
Condolences to all his family and friends.

@ Mr. Berkeley
Excuse but where did you read that he fell in a lift shaft? While expressing condolences for family and friends it's not fair either to point fingers without knowing the facts

Who said it was a lift shaft? It was just a shaft. The penthouse, once vacant should have had a door as security. Condolences to his family.

This is the second lift shaft death in the last few days that has been reported.
Isn't there a MEPA rule or a H&Safety rule that specified that lift shaft should be
securely blocked off and locked by the building owners when not being worked on ?
Lift shaft should not be accessable to the normal day-to-day users of the building
in anyway.
