Key witnesses give evidence

The prosecution leading the trial against former Chief Justice Noel Arrigo wrapped up its case this evening, after all its witnesses had testified.

Among those to testify this afternoon were Mario Camilleri, known as l-Imniehru, and his son Pierre, who both said they did not remember anything about the case.

Dr Arrigo is accused of bribery to reduce a jail term imposed on Mario Camilleri on appeal.

Mario Camilleri said he did not rmemeber doing anything or paying anyone to have his jail term reduced. Pierre Camilleri said he did not remember ever doing anything for his father's prison sentence to be reduced.

Businessman Anthony Grech Sant, who is serving time in jail in connection with the same case, said he had met Dr Arrigo in the afternoon, after the judgement had been handed down, and had thrown an envelope with money on his desk because he refused any money.

Joe Galea who works for Dr Arrigo's company and had previously said that Dr Arrigo had told him to lie, this afternoon said that he had made up that story himself. He said that when he met Dr Arrigo on the day after the judgement was handed down, Dr Arrigo was confused and angry and that he had never seen him like that before. He said he was angry at Mr Grech Sant because he had put the envelope with money on the desk and left it there.

The trial continues tomorrow morning when Dr Arrigo, for the first time in seven years, is expected to give his version of events.
