A recent news headline (The Sunday Times, October 25) read '€50m Blokrete investment to stop dust emissions'. So far, so good. Reading further reveals that this will actually take five to 10 years to complete.

It is also revealed that "new offices and commercial outlets would be built alongside the road" and that the dust-generating facility would be moved further away from the road.

This was "welcomed by Lija Mayor Ian Castaldi Paris and Simon Busuttil", who both campaigned against the pollution caused by the Blokrete plant.

So, even after the first court case instituted against Blokrete's pollution 40 years ago, the company will still be spewing dust for at least another five to 10 years.

It will be building more commercial outlets on the main road, and moving the plant further uphill.

In the meantime, residents in the area will keep breathing dust-laden air, probably for another generation, given the usual project-overruns.

And all this has been presented as a victory for the environment. Some victory!
