A conference closing the consultation process being led by the Gozo Action Group for the drawing up of a local development strategy under the EU programme Leader was held this morning.

The consultation process has been going on for months and meetings with all councils were held. Meetings with other interested parties were also held.

The aim of Leader is to improve sustainable rural development.

The initiative focuses on uniting the public with the private sector, operators in the agricultural and tourism sectors and non-governmental organisations.

Three action groups were formed - in Gozo and in the north west and south east of Malta and each were given €90,000 to draw up a strategy for local development.

During the Gozo conference, public consultation parliamentary secretary Chris Said said the consultation would help find solutions to the challenges faced by Gozitan localities.

The solutions would be planned and thought out by residents, organisations and entities. This would help more find more suitable solutions to the specific problems faced by Gozo.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said that through the initiative, Gozo would benefit from Leader funds and the programme’s initiatives were compatible with the government’s vision of an eco-Gozo.
