Swine flu: Osasuna defender Sergio Fernandez has H1N1 flu, the club said yesterday confirming the second case at the Pamplona-based side in recent days. Tests on Wednesday showed the presence of the virus and the player is resting at home. Fellow defender Oier was unable to train on Wednesday after coming down with the virus, the club added.

Klose: Germany and Bayern Munich striker Miroslav Klose has been quarantined after his twin sons contracted the H1N1 influenza virus (swine flu). "This is why Klose did not join the national squad in Bonn ... and he did not train on Thursday (yesterday) for Bayern," the club said. It was unclear whether the 31-year-old would attend a memorial on Sunday for Germany keeper Robert Enke, who committed suicide on Tuesday, or if he would play for the national team in Wednesday's friendly against Ivory Coast.

Players injured: Three players from Algeria's national football team were hurt yesterday when stones were thrown at their bus as they arrived in Cairo for tomorrow's World Cup qualifier with Egypt, Algeria's sports minister said.

Fined: Scottish club Rangers have been fined for the trouble caused by their fans at last week's Champions League match at Unirea Urziceni in Romania, UEFA said. Rangers were fined €20,000 ($29,990) by UEFA's disciplinary committee and ordered to pay for the cost of damage to the stadium caused by their supporters. Unirea were fined €8,000 for poor organisation at the Group G match which ended 1-1.

El Clasico: The La Liga showdown between champions Barcelona and arch-rivals Real Madrid later this month will be shown in cinemas, broadcast rights holder Mediapro said yesterday. The match, known in Spain as 'El Clasico', is provisionally scheduled for Nov. 29 and will be shown in Kinepolis, Yelmo and Cinesa theatres for the same price as a regular cinema entrance fee.

Shittu: Bolton Wanderers defender Danny Shittu has pulled out of Nigeria's World Cup qualifier against Kenya because of injury, officials said yesterday. The Nigerian FA did not give details of the injury. Nigeria have already had to call up Kalu Uche from Almeria in place of injured midfielder Sani Keita.

Jurado: Atletico Madrid midfielder Jurado has extended his contract by three years to the end of June 2013. The 23-year-old signed for Atletico from city rivals Real Madrid in July 2006 and played last season at Real Mallorca.

Rugby: Australia's former dual international Wendell Sailor announced his retirement from all forms of rugby yesterday, ending a colourful professional career spanning 16 years. A powerfully built winger, Sailor was among a handful of players to represent his country in both codes, playing 19 tests in league and 37 in union. He won a World Cup in league in 2000 and played in the Australian side that lost the 2003 rugby union World Cup final to England.

Cycling: Italian cyclist Matteo Priamo has been banned for four years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for his involvement in former team-mate Emanuele Sella's doping case. CAS said in a statement that it had accepted an appeal from the anti-doping prosecutor of Italy's Olympic Committee (CONI) against a decision by CONI's own anti-doping tribunal (TNA), which in February found Priamo not guilty due to lack of evidence. CAS said Priamo's case was referred to the TNA tribunal after Sella confessed he had used EPO CERA provided by his team-mate in 2008.

Horse racing: Leading Irish jockey Paul Carberry, who won the 1999 Aintree Grand National on Bobbyjo, has been banned for 30 days after failing a breath test before Naas races on Oct. 31. The ban starts on Nov. 25 and he has a week to appeal. It was Carberry's second such offence and he was also fined 5,000 euros ($7,500). An Irish Turf Club media release said its referrals committee was conscious of its role in ensuring the continued safety of racing but had also taken into account assurances given by Carberry's solicitor "in relation to certain matters."

Basketball: The Washington Wizards signed free agent guard Earl Boykins on Wednesday to bolster their injury hit backcourt. Boykins, 33, has averaged 9.4 points and 3.4 assists over 10 NBA seasons that has included stints with New Jersey, Cleveland, Orlando, L.A. Clippers, Golden State, Denver, Milwaukee and Charlotte. Last season Boykins, one of the shortest men ever to play in the NBA, played for Virtus Bologna in the Italian A League.
