Scores of people had their blood sugar level tested today to mark World Diabetes Day, which is celebrated tomorrow.

Some 20 peripheral health clinics were taking part in the testing drive, apart from health centres.

Speaking at the Mosta Health Centre, Health Parliamentary Secretary Joe Cassar said around 10 per cent of the local population suffers from diabetes, with six per cent taking some form of medication for their condition. He said only four per cent were controlling their condition through a diet.

Attempts are also being made to reduce the waiting list for an appointment with a diabetes specialist at Mater Dei Hospital by channelling patients through health centres. A pilot project had started in Gzira and this was expected to be rolled out across the island soon.
