A group of 13 refugees from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia left Malta to begin a new life in the United States.

Since the US Embassy began its permanent refugee resettlement program in May last year, more than 350 refugees have been resettled in the US.

Ambassador Douglas Kmiec said during a reception he hosted for the refugees that the US government was committed to help ease the burden migration has placed on Malta.

He told the refugees that America was a land of opportunity whose identity was forged by generations of immigrants.

"I am certain that each of you will find a bright future there as you become a part of our unique and diverse society.”

Once in the US, each refugee will be assigned a sponsor agency that provides initial services such as housing, food, and clothing, as well as referral to medical care, employment services, and other support during a transition period lasting up to two years, to ensure integration and assimilation.
