A Ukrainian national was this morning charged with the murder of his wife, 35-year-old Liudmyla Nykytiuk.

Sergii Nykytiuk, 37, who is pleading not guilty, was remanded in custody.

The Ukrainian woman who was found dead in an empty elevator shaft at the block of flats where she lived in Ramon Perellos Street, St Paul's Bay, on Monday.

Ms Nykytiuk, who was pronounced dead by forensic doctor Mario Scerri, was brought out of the shaft by the Civil Protection Department and carried to the hearse almost three hours after she was found.

Prosecuting officers asked the Court to hear Ukrainian witnesses as quickly as possible since some were found to be overstaying their visa and had to be deported.
