Police investigating mayor

The police are investigating reports of abuse of power by the mayor of Żebbuġ, Brian Bonnici. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi confirmed this to Philip Mifsud (PN) after the media reported that the mayor had engaged council workers to work in his house.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi confirmed this to Philip Mifsud (PN) after the media reported that the mayor had engaged council workers to work in his house. The workers had been seconded to the council by IPSL (Industrial Projects Services Ltd) which assigns work to former dockyard workers.

Dr Gonzi said a report on the alleged abuse had been made directly to IPSL and not the Department of Local Government. When the allegations were confirmed as being well founded, the three workers assigned to the council were transferred to other councils.

The Prime Minister said the department was collecting information on the case and the police are investigating. Mr Bonnici has since resigned.
