Police investigating mayor
The police are investigating reports of abuse of power by the mayor of Żebbuġ, Brian Bonnici.
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi confirmed this to Philip Mifsud (PN) after the media reported that the mayor had engaged council workers to work in his house. The workers had been seconded to the council by IPSL (Industrial Projects Services Ltd) which assigns work to former dockyard workers.
Dr Gonzi said a report on the alleged abuse had been made directly to IPSL and not the Department of Local Government. When the allegations were confirmed as being well founded, the three workers assigned to the council were transferred to other councils.
The Prime Minister said the department was collecting information on the case and the police are investigating. Mr Bonnici has since resigned.

Haz-Zebbug has lost a mayor who has done a lot of good work especially in the culture section. He was also the mayor who has brought Zebbug Local Council finances in order and was working on a project which included resurfacing of several streets around Zebbug. One of them is Triq il-Kurkanta where I live. I would like also to thank him for his help and dedication for Ghaqda tal-Genituri bi Tfal b'Diffikulta' fit-Taghlim where with the help of the local council, the Ghaqda organises lessons for children who have difficulty in learning and also organises talks on subjects related to difficulty in learning to the parents of these children. Hope the new mayor will keep up the good work of his predecessor.

Is this the same mayor, who for the past few years, erected billboards criticizing the government about roadworks and other issues?!
