I am very sad of hearing of such an incident! But I am very happy that no one was harmed. I find it very frustrated when certain people jump to conclusions and say that all guns should be banned or that guns are not needed! This is nonsense.
Do you realize that there are honest, genuine persons who love to collect or practice target shooting, like any other sports in the world. You can’t ban cars because there are people who drive carelessly and cause accidents! Or you can’t ban baseball because someone gets beaten to death with a bat! Can you understand now?! I can give a myriad of other examples but if one has a paradigm on something it will become very difficult for him to understand and try to reason out!
I hope you understand my point.

hmmm ... sorry but as a gun owner: firearms are taken far too casually on these islands, even watching the so called hunters handling them makes me cringe !!.. now of course every shotgun is licensed and stored properly in a gun safe separate from the ammunition ? well no .. that would dent the macho ego would it not.

@John Axiak - If the time comes, how do you suppose law enforcement keep things under control? With pitchfork and torches?
Ok, we are talking about Malta, but this can't get any lower.

OK John Axiak we know you don't like guns.
No need to come up with any more arguments, "facts" and comparisons to justify your untenable point of view.
Judging by the scarcity of comments supporting your point of view, it seems that the majority of the thinking population and intelligent enough to assume a more reasonable stand.

Firearms in the hands of the people make our society unsafe. Unlike other tools (such as knives) firearms have a far greater power to cause harm. Firearms unlike knives, cars and other instruments that can cause harm, have no other fruitful use except exhibiting machismo.
Therefore they should be banned.
@Malcolm Farrugia: Legitimating gun ownership on the ground that cars, knives and other instruments cause death is like me arguing for the legalization of heroin just because the sugar and caffeine in your coffee cup makes you hyper.

Here's a jolly one for the illusionary ban brigade. Hopefully you will never face this scenario once knives are banned however consider this. You and your family are cornered in your room. An aggressive intruder bursts into your home. His menacing knife clearly shows his intent is not to negotiate with you. Behind you in one corner you have a broom and in the other corner you have a gun. Which do you grab ?

@ a fenech
example 1, when there is a murder involving knives, should knives be banned?
example 2, when there is a traffi accident, should all vehicles be banned?
final example, after 11/09, should all aircraft be banned from flying?

Seems to me she's trying to protect the life she has from mindless trigger happy people with guns. If you took offense you must belong to that jolly group.

@Aimee Fenech - Shall we ban all cars as well while in the process of making Malta safer?
