A new technology combining stannous fluoride and sodium hexametaphosphate has been launched after 12 years of clinical development create a formula that is effective in fighting plaque, gingivitis and gingival bleeding while inhibiting calculus and extrinsic stain.
The formula can be found in the Crest Expert Gum Protection toothpaste.
Procter & Gamble, International Operation, Development & Export Market, Geneva, Edita Dvoncova, said stannous fluoride was introduced in toothpaste in 1955 and is one of the longest anti-caries established agents. Sodium hexametaphosphate has proven anti-calculus efficacy and was shown to be helpful in whitening surface stains. A combination of the two elements in toothpaste provided multiple benefits for oral health and cosmetically.
“The challenge to P&G researchers was to overcome the instability of stannous fluoride and sodium hexametaphosphate and produce most of the positive benefits that these powerful ingredients can deliver”, said Dr Dvoncova.
It took P&G researchers approximately two and a half years to get the right balance in the formula.
