The extension of the period through which one could chose how property being sold was taxed was being extended from five to seven years with immediate effect, the Finance Ministry said.

The ministry said in a statement that this measure, announced in the budget yesterday, was giving property sellers the option to get taxed 12 per cent on the market value of the property or 35 per cent on capital gains.
