Żebbug mayor to step down
Brian Bonnici
Żebbuġ mayor Brian Bonnici resigns today amid Nationalist Party media allegations that he used council-paid staff to carry out works at his home.
Mr Bonnici, who was elected on the Labour Party's ticket, could not be contacted for comment yesterday as his mobile phone was switched off.
But his resignation was confirmed by Labour deputy leader Toni Abela when he spoke at the Żebbuġ Labour Party club yesterday.
Party sources said Mr Bonnici was denying the claims but wanted to challenge them on a personal level, without risking harming the party's reputation.

What I dislike in this picture is Architect Buhagiar behind Mr Bonnici. Every picture tells a story. Supporting Labour does not necessarily imply supporting such people!!!!!!!!!!

ehhmm...1. What has this story got to do with Minister Fenech's case? They're totally different. 2. Why did the Zebbug mayor step down so swiftly ?

@Danika Vella. At least he's got more backbone than the PN ministers combined. He knew, he may have erred, and chose the gentleman way out! How many ministers, parliamentary secretaries can do or will do what the Zebbug Mayor did? We've had a recent spate of corruption cases. Did anyone resign? They're all spineless!

Let's begin hearing the pl supporters saying this man has a backbone - he hasn't! he's abandoning ship when he sees there is no way out. he's fighting the case 'privately' - meaning no one will know the outcome because it will not be published - meaning he will go away quietly and let things settle and probably won't open a case at all because he'll know it's a lost cause. pl supporters please - don't try to cover up by comparing this man to tonio fenech... this guy was using funds supposed to be used for embellishing the village for his own needs, while leaving the state of Haz-Zebbug in a pitiable state, and then having the guts to accuse the government for lack of funds given to the council, and of not doing works that should have been done by the local council! see this link if you don't believe me: http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20091012/local/stop-ignoring-us-zebbug-council-tells-government that street is not a bypass, but it's inside the residential area, and thus should be under the council's responsability. Good Riddance he's resigning... hope he won't re-apply for a post on the council in the_future!
