The government will next year curtail recruitment in the civil service, and only essential personnel will be replaced on retirement.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said in the Budget speech that this action would reduce public expenditure by around €10 million.

Government entities having the potential to generate revenue from the sector in which they operated would no longer be dependent on Government subvention. For this reason, a new tariff structure for MEPA issued permits would come in force resulting in this entity not receiving central government funds.

BENEFIT FRAUD

Mr Fenech said efforts to counter benefit fraud would be intensified. Till September of this year, 861 benefits had been stopped, reaching a value of €3.1 million per year.
