Club World Cup: South Korea's Pohang Steelers beat Saudi side Al Ittihad 2-1 in the Asian Champions League final yesterday to book their spot in FIFA's Club World Cup. The Koreans twice caught the Saudis cold from free-kicks. The four-times Korean champions earned a place in next month's lucrative Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

Milan: Milan have signed Ghana U-20 striker Dominic Adiyiah from Norwegian club Fredrikstad. Adiyiah attracted the Serie A club's attention by helping Ghana win the U-20 World Cup last month in Egypt, where he was the tournament's top scorer with eight goals. Adiyiah's contract will become valid in January.

Unirea charged: Romanian club Unirea Urziceni could face disciplinary action for the poor organisation of their Champions League match against Rangers, UEFA said. European soccer's governing body also said that Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb have appealed against a three-point deduction in the Europa League.

Swine flu: The Belgian third division match between Bleid and US Centre yesterday was postponed due to an outbreak of swine flu at the visiting club. It was the first time a professional football match had been suspended in the country due to the virus.

Penev goes: CSKA Sofia coach Luboslav Penev resigned on Friday, saying he was frustrated by the club owners' decision to reinstate nine players who were suspended after late-night drinking sessions. Penev imposed the ban after Sunday's 2-0 league defeat by Litex Lovech, saying the players were "ruining the atmosphere".

Grenoble: Grenoble picked up their first point of the Ligue 1 season with a goalless draw at Monaco last night to avoid matching Manchester United's record of the worst start in a major European league. The bottom club kept Monaco at bay after 11 consecutive defeats. United's 1930-31 team lost their first 12 games.

Bento resigns: Sporting coach Paulo Bento resigned following his team's 1-1 home draw against Latvian side Ventspils in the Europa League and a poor run of results at home. Bento, 40, who played for Sporting and Benfica, became Sporting coach in 2005 and led the side to four consecutive runners-up places in the league.

Rugby Union: Internationals - England vs Australia 9-18 (HT: 5-9); Wales vs New Zealand 12-19 (HT: 6-6).

Swimming: Russia's Evgeny Korotyshkin set a new world record in the men's 100-metres butterfly, clocking 48.99sec in the Moscow leg of FINA's World Cup short course swimming series yesterday. Korotyshkin bettered the previous mark of 49.07sec, set by Ian Crocker of the United States on March 26, 2004 in New York.

Pan American Games: Toronto was awarded the 2015 Pan American Games by beating the South American capitals Bogota and Lima on the first ballot. Toronto, which has twice failed in bids to land the Summer Olympics, has budgeted $2.4 billion for the Games that will be spread out across 16 other southern Ontario municipalities. Canada has twice before hosted the Pan Am Games, in 1967 and 1999 in Winnipeg and is preparing to stage the Winter Olympics in Vancouver next February.

Golf: HSBC has extended its sponsorship of the Women's Champions tournament in Singapore until 2012 but the prize money will be cut from $2 million to $1.3 million for next year's LPGA event. The prize pot will, however, go up by a further $100,000 in 2011 and given the negative impact of the economic downturn on sponsorship on the professional women's tour, the LPGA will still be delighted to retain a major title sponsor.

Basketball, NBA: Kobe Bryant became the youngest NBA player to reach 24,000 points on Friday, the Lakers' guard scoring 41 to lead injury-hit Los Angeles to a 114-98 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. Bryant made 19-of-30 shots for his second 40-point performance in a row, and his third in four games, as last season's NBA champions carved out another win despite the absence of injured starters Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

Tennis: Marion Bartoli will play Aravane Rezai in an all-French final at the Tournament of Champions in Bali after both claimed straight-sets victories yesterday. Bartoli reached her fourth final of the season by defeating Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm 6-1 6-3, while Rezai beat Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-2 6-3. Date Krumm, at 39 the oldest player on the WTA Tour, was seeking her second final of the year after winning the Korea Open.
