Zebbug Mayor to resign

Zebbug Mayor Brian Bonnici is to resign following PN media reports that he engaged council workers for works in his own home.

PL deputy leader Toni Abela confirmed the resignation when he spoke at the Zebbug Labour Party club today.

PL sources said Mr Bonnici, who was elected on the Labour ticket, was denying the claims and intended to fight the allegations, but he did not wish to harm the party in any way.

@Kurt Mifsud
yeah sure he solved the debt problem the council had over three years... the debt accumulated by his compatriots the labourites btw - by doing nothing instead of investing in anything.

What this man did was take us all for a ride... Haz-Zebbug is in a pitiable state, and we are the ones to suffer. But the Zebbugin keep on electing the same people over and over again, we never learn... it's our fault. I hope the people choose better people next elections - ones who are truly interested in doing something for our village. Maybe then something gets done.

@michael catania ....how can you congratulate someone for resigning because he/she did something wrong...its an anticlimax...
@A.Tabone....seems you do not know the JPO case well enough. There was a decision lately, have you seen it?
Minister Fenech's case has no resemblance whatsoever to this case, so end it. Be critical in a constructive manner, and leave Fenech's and Gonzi's and other politicians out of it....or else take a break!!!! Have a KitKat....
Kurt Mifsud (1 week, 3 days ago)
@G.Debono

Take a look on foreign newspapers and you'll see that for allegations of even for example a minister's secretary, the minister will resign. An exception was Berlusconi, but Berlusconi is what he is...

@Danika Vella

I thought he even solved the debt problems the council had in just 3 years!
A Vella (1 week, 3 days ago)
No Danika, accountability is either going against the code of ethics but staying in the place because 'the prime minister trusts you' or you deny favours claims and take them to court, but not resigning, and continuing to abuse of your position. That is accountability!
Stefanie Boyd (1 week, 3 days ago)
True, Do we have a Council in Zebbug?
Mario Bonnici (1 week, 3 days ago)
That's what I call accountability.
PN please take a note.
robert micallef (1 week, 3 days ago)
i did not know that we in Zebbug actually have a council any more.
Danika Vella (1 week, 4 days ago)
so accountability is resigning when getting caught doing something wrong? i thought it was avoiding doing that something wrong in the first place, and if done something wrong, apologize and own up before they catch you.
.
the zebbug mayor only resigned because he had no alternative. he did not do it because he has backbone - in fact i think it's more the reverse, but that's my opinion. and for those who are comparing him to tonio fenech... i don't remember reading anywhere that dr fenech used taxpayer's money to go on that trip! it's laughable reading all these comments praising mr bonnici because he resigned - is that the way you want our politicians to be? use up taxpayer's money for their own needs? there's a lot of difference between this case and that of tonio fenech... please... thalltux il-hass mal-....

Lesson one in accountability. What is this said the Minister who thinks that he has inherited his seat?

Maybe the next mayor will shake up the Zebbug council !

I moved here from Balzan 7 years ago and have always found the Zebbug council to be utterly useless and unhelpful when needed. (Balzan has an excellent and efficient council)

Our street had defective street lighting and was in pitch darkness for 11WHOLE MONTHS!
All they could tell us was that the council owed money to the contractor and he kept on refusing to sort out the problem! - "Heq xi tridna naghmlu"

Eventually our local (PN) MP intervened and a contractor from another locality did the job in minutes!

Believe it or not Zebbug doesn't even have a BULK REFUSE SERVICE ! - Probably for the same reason as above.

Zebbug and its residents deserve much better!

@ A Busuttil et al

Whereas the Zebbug Mayor allegedly used public funds (taxpayers' money) in order to fix his roof, and worse, allegedly let the employee punch in and have a paid day off, Tonio Fenech's flight to Spain on a private plane cost the taxpayer zilch. If the Mayor feels he has done nothing wrong, he had the option of making his resignation effective the day he is found in breach of the law/ethics. He must have doubts of being eventually exonerated .

Hence the difference and hence the necessity for the Mayor to resign and for Tonio Fenech to stay put and continue doing a good job for your and everybody's sake.
michael catania (1 week, 4 days ago)
I must congratulate Zebbug Mayor for resigning his position on these allegations unlike the conservatives who cling to position of power no matter what, the people in the LP are persons of integrity who are elected to positions in local and central goverment to serve those people.
@ Borg Cardona. You are right we do expect others in the conservative camp to follow the example, but then there will such a huge vacuum that you will not have anyone of integrity to fill the positions
m. borg (1 week, 4 days ago)
A good example of how things should be done.

Take note Tonio Fenech.

K. Vella, Charles J. Buttigieg - You mean, do the damage and then abandon ship?
d.attard (1 week, 4 days ago)
A breath of fresh air. We have had massive loads of hot air from Government on anything that effects our daily lives with no percieved benefit for us residents at the end of it. It is good to see that the spirit of accountability is still alive in the other lot. Some hope for the future.

Finally political parties are entering into the previously unknown territory of taking political responsibility. Nice to see that we're going somwehere!
Mike Magri (1 week, 4 days ago)
This is Political Accountability at its best, and once again it had to come from the PL side. As from the PN side, under these last 20 years of their Regime, we have ONLY seen cover-ups, banal excuses, feint resignations and half baked statements..

Mr. Bonnici, i am sure that in the end, you will come out politically stronger.
Silvio Schembri (1 week, 4 days ago)
What a difference between the PN and the PL. This is how politics should be. Real respect for the people.

Reuben Vella (1 week, 4 days ago)
Brilliant decision. That is the way how politics should be done ... everyone should be accountable for his decisions. But this is just the mayor....What about Mr. Tonio Fenech? He is a minister ... a finance minister is he going to follow suit?

Zebbug Mayor is to resign following alligations similar to those of Minister Tonio Fenech. What are you waiting for to do the same Mr Fenech?

Mary Ann Borg (1 week, 5 days ago)
yeah right, how could he, or MLP act otherwise? The police should move in on this because this guy, by getting employees paid by us the taxpayers, actually deprived the public from the services that the public paid for.
Joe Agius (1 week, 5 days ago)
Hope Tonio Fenech follow Brian Bonnici.

Antoine attard (1 week, 5 days ago)
Courage? I would say 'cornered without a way out'.

In the distant past we had an instance where a minister's note in order to favour an individual to 'jump' the queue to acquire a colour TV was published..the reason/excuse at the time..."it was a joke".

At least today the honourable step is being taken....I hope there are no U-turns however.
Muscat. Pat (1 week, 5 days ago)
It is good to see people resigning; thats accountability. The same cannot be said of special people in high positions, where, unfortunately, they think that no matter what, they will stick to their seat forever and ever. Europe was a good excuse to win power, as for European accountability, the ministers are still in the kindergarden stage!
Joe Cassar (1 week, 5 days ago)
Minister Tonio Fenech please note.
steve elliott,uk (1 week, 5 days ago)
Fallen on his sword so he has jumped before he was pushed
Michael Grech (1 week, 5 days ago)
He had the back bone to resign....and Tonio Fenech still has not tendered his resignation...
Anthony Dimech (1 week, 5 days ago)
I don't agree that because of an allegation there has to be a resignation because we end up everyone throwing allegations and everyone resigning!
Adrian Cachia (1 week, 5 days ago)
At least he resigned.......there are a couple of other people that should follow.
A.Busuttil (1 week, 5 days ago)
After what it was said in the Malta Today Tonio Fenech should follow and fight this allegation

Deo Grazias! All this guy did during his reign in the local council was monuments... very few roads were surfaced... and they are much needed here! All you have to do is go on any peripheral street in the village, and all you'll see are potholes!

I hope the Zebbug people elect people who are truly interested in doing something for Haz-Zebbug next council election, and forget the stupid political parties. I really wonder why political parties were instituted in local councils? They are not serving any purpose, except notifying the present party in government that the people don't like them anymore... as happens each time anyway! I feel they are doing more harm than good. But obviously that does not interest much those in power. And I also don't see why the person who got more votes shouldn't be elected mayor... it makes no sense to choose someone else other than the people's majority!

@ K. Vella : (your quote ) Good to see someone having the courage to resign following such serious allegations

It is also good, that this case won't STOP here and will be Investigated, and If there is a price to pay, Zebbug Mayor Must pay, there is a Law on an abuses with, Work, Workers too.
E.T.C is int this a work Abuse ? mela min jirregistra biss jaqla bil - Mannara ???
G.Debono (1 week, 5 days ago)
People cannot start resigning purely on allegations, otherwise, Joe Muscat / Gonzi can resign from tomorrow or the next allegation. To me, the fact that this man is resigning means a lot to the whole case.

Do resign on facts and realities, but dont resign on allegations.

PN supporters will cry foul at this case
MLP ones, will say, qed tara kemm ahna bullies - we resign.

The rest of the population will ask for facts before resignations.
Horace Gatt (1 week, 5 days ago)
There's an example to follow Mr Finance Minister.
Andrew Borg-Cardona (1 week, 5 days ago)
Without detracting from Mr Mifsud's gesture, now we will get a whole raft of entirely predictable comments about how other people should do the same.
A. Tabone (1 week, 5 days ago)
Well done... this is how things should be. JPO should do the same.
K. Vella (1 week, 5 days ago)
Good to see someone having the courage to resign following such serious allegations.
Charles J. Buttigieg (1 week, 5 days ago)
This is the stuff the PL preaches and practices. Public perception has to be respected.
