Thea in splendid performance with Gigi D'Alessio

Maltese singer Thea Garrett Falzon, 17, lived up to expectations with a brilliant performance with Gigi d'Alessio in Rome last night.

Another Maltese, Christabelle Borg will get her chance to perform with the Italian star today.

Thea told The Times earlier this year how her road to Rome started from an idea by former Maltasong chairman Grace Borg. Ms Borg handed a CD of popular music by Ms Falzon Garrett and Christabelle Borg to the Italian singer’s management company, who suggested the two take part in a talent scout competition.

Since then Ms Falzon Garrett had been training to learn the song Apri le Braccia (Open Your Arms).

She admitted it was not an easy feat for someone who is not fluent in Italian.

Winning the competition to join D'Alessio was a step towards another dream - performing in public at London’s West End. Since childhood she has loved the theatre, especially Les Miserables and the Phantom Of The Opera. Earlier this year she came close to winning a prestigious scholarship at London’s Royal Academy of Music when she placed among the first 20 from some 22,000 people contesting the Voice Of Tomorrow competition.

“It was the first time I sang in public, in front of so many people, so I was very happy with the placing,” she said.

First of all well done Thea. AS POINTED OUT there were other singers such as Raquela and Christabelle. I saw the competition on line but to be totally honest it really was not such a tough competition. Nonetheless it seems the Maltese contestants took it very seriously. Personally i feel that whilst Thea's voice is great , in my opinion it's too operatic and might find a better place in other genres or even musicals. Also worth mentioning The GIGI duet was done twice before by Ira Losco - once in Malta and the following one in the Greek Theatre in Italy. I found a link on line of one of the performances you tube :

Just to inform everyone that Christabelle and Thea aren't the only Maltese chosen to sing with Gigi D'Alessio. One of Malta's brilliant vocalists Raquela DG will also have this opportunity.

@ Joe Fenech - not knowing who is Gigi d'Alessio is equivalent to not knowing that Malta has introduced first its decimal currency and further the euro in 2008. The sitta, sold, habba etc are no longer our currency Mr Fenech.

Who on earth is Gigi d'Alessio? A muratore from Trapani??????

Her performance puts all the other Maltese Have BEENS with their mighty mouth in their place hopefully most past singers who think they can sing because there was nobody else about will disappear permanently, i think they embarrassed us enough in the eyes of the world, so concentrate on this new talent. Well Done Thea.

Well what about mentioning Raquela who was the only one who qualified for this competition on her own accord. She will also be singing on 22 November 2009 with Gigi D'Alessio.

Amazing voice brilliant show. I don't know the person but I was stunned by her voice, this show exactly that we don't need to waste time, energy and money in the eurovision song. Good work goes to Ms Borg as well who I know personally and knows how hard she works for the maltese Singers.

Well done to Thea and good luck to Christabelle!! It's nice to see Maltese talent being preferentially chosen in another country!
The Italians have a saying on one of their MTV Italia programmes: 'We all know that... Italians do it better'... and I would like to add... '...but the Maltese do it best' :p

joking apart, does anyone know how many people were chosen to accompany Gigi d'Alessio please? I can't seem to find a list of all the finalists on any site :/ thank you!
