Charged with kidnapping baby

A man was held in custody after being charged with kidnapping his girlfriend's 10-month-old baby and assaulting the woman in a heated argument.

Mauro Zammit, 23, allegedly got in a fight with his girlfriend because he suspected she was still romantically involved with the baby's natural father. He allegedly bit her on various parts of her body, took the baby away and drove to the child's natural father where he handed the child over to him, police sources said.

Mr Zammit pleaded not guilty to kidnapping the baby, seriously injuring his girlfriend and threatening her on Tuesday at about 8 p.m. in Naxxar.

Magistrate Silvio Meli remanded the man in custody after taking into consideration the seriousness of the charges.

Police Inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted. Lawyer Anġlu Farrugia appeared for Mr Zammit.
