Thief jailed for slashing car owner
Stephen Urry, 30, was today jailed for five years after he admitted to slashing a man's neck, causing serious injury.
The court was told that Mr Urry had been trying to break into Geoffrey Mallia's Land Rover to steal a stereo from it. When the alarm went off, Mr Mallia turned up and a fight broke out. Mr Urry slashed Mr Mallia with a knife, causing serious injury to his neck.
Magistrate Antonio Vella after noting that the accused had relapsed, jailed him for five years.

It should have been treated as attempted murder . If the alarm went off he could have ran off not continued trying to steal and getting in a fight .

@ Joe Cordina - I agree with you and fail to see the point of Henry Abela's comments.
All the sensitivity towards the perpetrators is sometimes showing a lack of sensitivity towards the victims. My partner was once betrayed by a colleague and was stolen a large sum of money. The trauma left quite a scar that lasted much more than what the culprit got - a suspended sentence, apart from having kept the job for 'humane' reasons. My partner could not stand the other person and quitted instead.
We're not all made of steel, unfortunately.

@ Henry Abela
Please note that he would not be serving five years but only about three. Moreover his criminal record had been previously blemished so I do not understand your comment. I think that this incident has not only left a visible mark on the victim but more so a psycological mark, he will never forget this.

sitting in a Maltese Jail by all accounts especially for a FULL 5 year term is an experience that will not be forgotton very easily, also a permanent thorn in the side not only for applying for a job in Malta or abroad, but also or worse still filling up an application for for emmigration as his conduct would be check thoroughly and if one has a criminal record then might as well kiss his backside goodbye.

15yrs would have been much better but our courts are a hopeless case.

Well, he did get less than the guy who stole some paintings from a magistrate's house. That one got seven years.
I think the justice system needs a revamp!

Only 5 years!
He could have killed him. We should set an example.
