A fire broke out yesterday in a huge storage tower filled with wood chippings owned by furniture company Fino.

Firemen spent two hours putting out the blaze, which started at about 11.30 a.m. in the huge chimney-like structure on Fino's factory in Mrieħel.

The storage area, almost four storeys high, was filled with wood chips extracted from the factory.

Fire-fighters from the Corradino, Floriana and Ħal Far stations, were called in to tackle the blaze. On site were five fire engines and a water tanker.

When asked how the fire affected their operations, the company said it had no comments to make at this stage, adding that the source of the fire had not yet been established.
