@Michael Galea
So if the Maltese presence upset the likes of you so much and ‘people with the right mind’ will not cross to evil Malta why not propose to barricade Gozo and stop the crossings altogether? Regarding property in Malta, as an example, ask the Gozitan University students living in Malta and they will give you a few Gozitan contacts from where to hire.

All these comments everybody whinge my feeling from all these comments it,s all sour grapes because some people have a second home in Gozo oh well they must have worked hard and looked after there money then there are people who prefer a fat bank book and some who thinks that tomorrow never comes and if they bought a house in Gozo see how much money they spend in Gozo surely it ,s good for the economy and for the guy who want,s the government to introduce the property tax you must be not thinking right because everybody is complaining because electricity going up and can,t afford it let alone how you can and many people can afford property tax and remember without rich people the world would stop and without the poor people the world would stop.For all the empty properties you have to realise how much money they generated in the country and how much people worked to built them plus if they are empty see how much money they are loosing in interest while it is setting there waiting to be sold.

It is not usual for me to write in any media but this thing about Gozo property really irks me lot.
A) Everyone knows that 'owning' a property in Gozo does not mean one is 'rich'. In our case we are still paying and will pay a lot more to call the property ours. B) The WSC considers our property as 'commercial' therefore, sky high rates. See the government is 'stealing' from us to subsidise.......... C) While we are in Gozo, which we do often, one can't live by air alone - either go out to eat or cook at home. And this is not free . We Pay. These three simple reasons perhaps are not so much to show the shallow reasoning of those who complain about the Gozo Channel subsidized fares. As for voting in Gozo or in Malta I don't really give a damn and if things continue to get worse ie more expenses and the lot, I doubt if I will ever vote again!

J.Spiteri @of yeah what about giving us some figures of how many Gozitans owe a property in Malta? it would be interesting to know, and who in his right mind want to spend time in malta any how,when most maltese would give their right arm to come to Gozo? i wonder? No need to be jealous my friend we understand.

First and foremost....in the EU these discriminatory subsides are illegal. Secondly, how many Gozitans own property in Malta but still benefit from the system? Far more than Maltese owning a flat in Gozo for sure!

I do not object to anyone from the mainland being registered as living in an address in Gozo ( this is not made out of love for Gozo mind you, only to save a few bob on the ferry and maybe on the energy bill) . This is a free country with freedom of movement, but I strongly object that such individuals vote in the locality where they are registered and the district of Gozo, distorting the political wishes of genuine residents of Gozo. These would not have an idea which is the best canditate and more would not give a hoot about the social needs of the locals. One should consider that from these numbers given, one would come to an estimation that 7-8% of total voters in Gozo are such persons who in reality live elsewhre. More imagine what a distortion these create in local election especially in Zebbug and also Munxar, small localities with a high concentration of such voters. Yes you are most welcome to spend weekends on Gozo but please refrain from voting in the elections if you are not genuinely residing here. Gozo Channel should find another way how to control the subsidies fares.

I dont know whats the fuss about... In my opinion, people living in Gozo should only benefit from the subsidy, regardless if you are Maltese or Goziatan.
@ M.Galea - Malta compared to Gozo is hectic, but come on. You should'nt compare Maltese as invaders... Yes, its true, I admit, some Maltese like to cause trouble while in Gozo, just for the simple fact that they arent on the mainland, but most of them are really nice people! Btw, this is coming from a fellow Gozitan :)
@ Anita Vella - SPOT ON!!!!!!

I understand what you are saying Anita Vella as i experienced the look on some of the Maltese's faces when i asked them are you a Gozitan,ofcourse no need to mention their reaction, let me tell U Anita, we are foreigners decided to retire in Gozo or shall i say Peaceful and Lovely Gozo and its people, if i had to live in malta i would turn round pack our belongings and off we go as far away as possible from tha maddening crowd of malta.Never in this world will i live on the main island, and i find the Maltese a bit stuck up when i say we live in Gozo although we are not Gozitan we are proud to associate ourselves with the Gozitans as they are really a nice and friendly people, more then i can say for the Maltesers.

@D.Bonello we have to pay taxes in my country for a second home and also if the property happens to be outside one's own country so why not Malta? The Maltese tend to moan about their security and their countrie's finance situation but they are always slow to follow other countries example, probably will in time but at a very very slow pace. This is one reason why i will never invest in a foreign country but my own homeland for that very same reason, but still we love Malta and we just stay in a hotel for the duration, no fuss, no stress and a much easier life.

Would these people identify themselves as Gozitans? I bet no!!!!! They would still like to be called Maltese, coz Gozitans are so well uncivilised... I am proud to be Gozitan but what bothers me is that the only instances when Maltese do assimilate themselves with Gozitans are in such cases.

While it is true that those who has their second home in gozo have in a way reduced prices but please note that while these people are in gozo they spend money to furnish their property, the go out to resturants, buy from commerical outets and contribute to the gozitian economy on a regular basis not only during santa marija week or easter time! One should see this in a wider context. And please note too that these people work hard to do this!

WOWW 554 persons benefiting from benefits given by the Government supposed to be only for Gozitans. Another case of corruption on this island! You should be proud of it Gonzi...

This would be a good start for the Government to implement poperty tax for second homes (Vilagajtura). Than both political parties should be in agreement to move on to indroducing property tax on the rest of the island. Lots of empty property to tax on the island, people will start selling empty properties and stop building when this happens.
This tax money should go to improving our roads schools etc. We are probably the only country in the EU that does not have property tax.

I with my Family (whom we are Maltese) spent 5 years in Gozo living there some time ago (now we're in Malta). I don't know whats the fuss. I have been around every rock and soil in Gozo and around ever rock and soil in Malta adventuring, hiking camping and stuff...
To my Surprise, Everything (nature-wise) that's in Gozo is found in Malta & more.
I don't Know why you are talking as if people living in Gozo are from another Country which are keeping themselves as far as possible from Malta.
The Gozitans (except few in the years i Spent in Gozo) where not as friendly as a Drunk British fellow after watching a football match. Malta has everything you need, people how are Open-Minded and mind there sole business. And if you want to go relax in peace it's not just Gozo that has the Nature.

This is a catch 22 situation here we have many Maltese and as some mentioned below owners of a 2nd home in Gozo, coming over for the weekend on a Gozitan id and thus saving the fair, and when they come here are moaning about the way we do things here in Gozo, also the Maltese got a habit of paying the poor man's game @GOT NO MONYEEEEEEE! THATS A LAUGH IN ITSELF. if i were a minister i would dig deeper and probe into this kind of fiddles by the Maltese same as the British newspapers are doing at this moment in time in the UK about the biggest fiddlers of them all the Politicians. Think about it>

@M.Galea
Building a bridge between Malta and Gozo would not necessarily mean that Gozo will be taken over by the Maltese. I'm in favour of a bridge because the 25 minutes ferry ride also means waiting for over 30 minutes at Cirkewwa or at Mgarr. Last Tuesday I had to go Malta for a lecture. At 2.30pm I was at Mgarr but only managed to take the 3.45pm ferry due to the queue.... 75 minutes waiting! I'm sure that a bridge would avoid all that wasted time in waiting. Crossing over the bridge should be done against the payment of a fare, just as if you're going to cross over with the ferry.

I wonder how many of them did so only to get the special allowances Gozitans have?!? I bet a good number of them live permanently in Malta, but have a second home in Gozo. If they can afford the two homes, why the hell do they need the benefits?!

How many now have a second home in Malta ?.
Moving to Gozo, has the benefit of cheaper ferry fares.

And most of them still live in Malta but find it convenient to have an ID card issued on their Gozo address, among other reasons, to benefit from Gozo Channel subsidized transport for Gozitans.

And who can blame them, we for one moved to Gozo sometime ago and i can asure you guys in Malta, i would never ever live in that stressful island, mad drivers galore, and the worse part is there are more foreigners then actual Maltese. Gozo to us is peace and tranquility. I am a Gozitan and my wife is Maltese, however many Maltese moan about Gozo and the Gozitans that we con them blind and what not, yet the* Maltese Moaners*sometimes even worse then the famous whingers of them all the Englsih or Brits. still come over here in their hundreds, so it can't be all that bad after all, i just hope to God that No Bridge will link Malta to Gozo, that whent the shit (dirt) hits the fan, thats my worst nitemare them (the Main islanders)coming over and take over our Calypso Island.
