A foreign friend of mine had a disturbing experience while using public transport recently. He knew his bus number (to Marsaxlokk) but was told he was wrong, only to find that the bus the driver told him to go on went to Marsascala. He ended up in Paola, having to try in vain to get on the next bus to Marsaxlokk which he should have been on an hour before. He also witnessed the bus doors being closed in an elderly man's face. Angry, frustrated and tired, he went back home.
Recounting his experience to friends later, it turned out that everyone had had a similar experience with bad-mannered bus drivers and the consensus is that "they are the only thing that is wrong with Malta as a holiday destination". These foreigners, who were happy with Malta on the whole, had their stay here marred by the bus drivers who seemed to be the antithesis of the friendliness of the rest of the population.
I asked my friend to report the bus drivers but he was too upset to do so and felt that it would be to no avail. Hence my letter. We can't go on believing that nothing can be done about this situation.
