Full-time gainfully occupied population decreases

Unemployment rises by 1,412

The full-time gainfully occupied population in June totalled 144,743, down by 1,179 when compared to the same month last year year.

The National Statistics Office said that concurrently, the number of registered unemployed increased by 1,412, an increase of 233 people in the labour supply to 7,273.

In the 12 months to June, the number of full-time gainfully occupied in manufacturing fell by 2,307. This decline comprised 1,676 men and 631 women.

Lower employment levels were mainly recorded in the transport equipment sector (-1,029), radio, television, and communication equipment and apparatus (-445), and manufacture of rubber and plastic products (-365).

A few economic activities within the manufacturing sector ran counter to this negative trend. These included the publishing, printing, and reproduction of recorded media, where full-time employment registered an increase of 67 employees.

Meanwhile, the number of full-time gainfully occupied in the services sector increased by 1,651. The main expansion in services took place in business activities (+919) and health and social work (+279). On the other hand, full-time employment in hotels and restaurants decreased by 462. Further drops were in air transport (-73) and recreational, cultural and sporting activities (-24).

In the month under review, ETC records indicated that part-time jobs totalled 49,873, an increase of 1,966 with respect to the previous year.

The main increase in part-time jobs was registered in wholesale and retail trade (+452) and education (+668).

On the other hand, part-time jobs in the manufacturing sector decreased by 71. Further drops in part-time employment were in public administration and defence (-59), and hotels and restaurants (-22).
