The Foreign Ministry yesterday came under the Labour Party’s fire for not taking any action against a former diplomat who, according to British documents, handed information to the UK in 1971.

Opposition spokesman Helena Dalli criticised the ministry for taking no action in spite of a report tabled in Parliament last week confirming that Ives De Barro had handed over sensitive information.

Mr De Barro has always denied the claims.

Reacting to the statement, the Ministry said the issue had actually been tackled seriously and to say that Mr De Barro was spying for the British government was incorrect.

It said he had only expressed his personal opinions on the current situation and did not divulge any sensitive information.
