Italian wanted by police
The police have launched a search for an Italian man who had previously absconded from the island, despite a bail condition not to leave.
Leandro Ambrogio, 45, of Marsascala, has two pending criminal cases against him which are related.
In the first case, he admitted to battering a car belonging to his daughter’s boyfriend because, he said, he was displeased with her choice of partner. His 20-year-old daughter was dating 50-year-old Victor Falzon whose Mazda 626 was damaged with a rock. Mr Ambrogio admitted to the charges brought against him but contested the amount of damages incurred. For this reason, the case was put off for judgment and the accused was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €2,000. One of the bail conditions was that he could not leave the country.
Mr Ambrogio ignored this condition and flew to Italy on May 28 to visit his mother and only returned on September 20. He was re-arrested immediately for breaching bail conditions, axrraigned again and given a 90-day jail term. However, he appealed the sentence and was released on the same bail conditions as previously.
But he has now failed to appear in court for the case and the court yesterday issued a warrant for his arrest. The police cannot trace him and have appealed for information about his whereabouts.
The police can be called on 2122 1111, 119 or the nearest police station.
